Dr. Edward Nketiah-Amponsah
Edward Nketiah-Amponsah did his PhD research at ZEF's Department of Economic & Technological Change from October 2006 until January 2010. The topic of his doctoral research was: Economic analysis of under-five morbidity, mortality and health seeking behaviour - evidence from Ghana. He received his doctoral degree from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bonn.

Dr. Daniel Callo-Concha
Daniel Callo-Concha from Peru did his PhD research at ZEF from August 2004 until January 2009 on the topic of "Functional biodiversity in tropical agro-forestry systems". He received his PhD degree from the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Bonn in February 2009 and was supervised by Profs Vlek (ZEF) and Janssens (Bonn University). His tutor was Dr. Denich (ZEF).

Dr. Eleni Ayalew
Eleni Ayalew from Ethiopia did her PhD research at ZEF from August 2005 until December 2008. She received her PhD degree from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science of Bonn University for her thesis on "Growing lake with growing problems: integrated hydro-geological investigation on Lake Beseka, Ethiopia". Her work was supervised by Profs. Diekkrüger and Vlek. She is the second ZEF alumna selected for DAAD's African Good Governance Network (AGGN).

Dr. Ihtiyor Bobojonov
Ihtiyor Bobojonov from Uzbekistan did his PhD research at ZEF from October 2004 until December 2008. His thesis was on "Modeling Crop and Water Allocation under Uncertainty in Irrigated Agriculture. A Case Study on the Khorezm Region, Uzbekistan". He received his PhD degree from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bonn under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Berg, Prof. Dr. Holm-Müller and PD Dr. Martius.

Dr. Gert-Jan Veldwisch
Gert-Jan Veldwisch from the Netherlands did his PhD research at ZEF from September 2004 until December 2007, defending his doctoral thesis in June 2008. His PhD research topic was irrigation water management in Khorezm, Uzbekistan, focusing on its socio-political aspects. He received his PhD degree from the Philosophy Faculty of Bonn University and was supervised by Solvay Gerke (ZEF), Peter Mollinga (ZEF) and Max Spoor (Institute of Social Studies ISS, the Netherlands).

African quartet graduates
Four ZEF doctoral students from Africa received their doctoral degrees: Damas Philip did his PhD thesis on "Biofuels production on poverty alleviation among small-scale farmers in Tanzania". Joy Kiiru did her PhD study on "The impact of microfinance on rural poor households' income and vulnerability to poverty in Makueni, Kenya". John Muo Kasina did his doctoral research on "Bee pollinators and the economic importance of pollination in crop production in Western Kenya". Benjamin Kofi Nyarko was a member of the GLOWA Volta project team and conducted his research on "Floodplains wetland - rivers flow synergy in the White Volta Basin in Ghana".

Dr. Irit Eguavoen
Irit Eguavoen is a German Social Anthropologist who started her PhD study at ZEF in October 2003. She conducted her research on household water in Northern Ghana. In July 2007, she successfully defended her thesis "Now you have a new pump, you have to manage it. Household water management, water rights and institutional change in Northern Ghana" at the Institute of Ethnology, University of Cologne.

Dr. René Capote-Fuentes
René Capote-Fuentes from Cuba received his Doctoral Degree on July 12 2007 from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Bonn University. He has been a doctoral student at ZEF since October 2003. He did research on ecological systems on the south coast of his home country under the supervision of Prof. Uta Berger (University of Bremen) and Prof. Paul Vlek (ZEF). After his graduation ceremony he found some time to give us an interview.

Dr. Dilys Kpongor Sefakor
Ms. Dilys Kpongor Sefakor from Ghana just received her doctoral degree from the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Bonn. Our proud and new doctor did her research on modeling of sorghum production in Ghana under supervision of Prof. Vlek (ZEF) and PD Dr. J. Burkhardt (Institute of Plant Nutrition, University of Bonn). In an interview she relates on her research and experiences at ZEF.
