Application

The main target group consists of young scientists from all over the world with an outstanding master’s or equivalent degree in economics, political science, agricultural and resource economics, engineering degrees, geography, mathematics, natural science or agriculture. Candidates preferably have work experience  in national or international research institutions, governments, or the private sector. Interest in interdisciplinary research is a prerequisite.


The main criteria for acceptance at ZEF’s Graduate School are:

  • Academic qualifications (an excellent master or equivalent degree: G.P.A. higher than 3.0 in the American system, or a grade higher than 2.0 in the German system or equivalent);
  • Excellence of the research proposal;
    We request a doctoral research plan for your application which should be formulated in reference to the core doctoral research themes of ZEF and its constituent departments. Only in exceptional cases, ZEF may consider proposed PhD projects which lie outside ZEF's core research activities.
  • The age limit is 32 years.
  • English is the spoken and written language of the entire program. Foreign students can attend a two-month German language course prior to the study program.
  • The Graduate School starts October 1, annually.

You may submit your application documents at any time, particularly if you already hold a scholarship or if you want to apply for a scholarship not provided by DAAD.

No matter which option you choose, we need your complete application documents

to be able to decide upon accepting you for the program and providing you with academic supervision.

Applying to the ZEF Doctoral Studies Program involves two steps:

Prior to sending the application documents and filling out the application form, each applicant has to register online. During online registration you will be asked to enter your personal data and information. After successful submission of your online registration you will receive a confirmation by e-mail. This e-mail message contains your registration number and all necessary information required for your application. Please use this number in any communication with us.

Please note that your online registration helps accelerate the selection and admission procedure, it IS NOT a substitute for the required documents to be sent by air or surface mail to the program coordinator´s office.
