Courses
Here is the tentative plan of lectures and seminars during the Academic Year 2011/12 for download (last update January 9, 2012)
The course program starts at the begining of October every year.
--------------------------------------------------
The course program includes three blocks of courses spread over the first and third year of the program.
Module I: The Interdisciplinary Course is mandatory for the students from all disciplines. This course intends to open the minds of the doctoral students to other disciplines and to change their working mentality for their future doctoral research. This course provides a sound theoretical background, including knowledge and skills to address the complex and interlinked problems of development. Three additional weeks are dedicated to reflective activities (writing, literature research) and writing of a term paper (mandatory for all students)
Module II: Disciplinary courses are structured along disciplinary lines in economics, social sciences, and ecology, with a special emphasis on theory and methodology (mandatory for the students of the respective discipline)
Module III: Courses on specific topics, or specific training for individual students provided in laboratories at the University of Bonn, or other cooperating institutes in Germany or abroad.
Special short courses: ZEF also offers training in GIS, remote sensing, mathematics and statistics, SPSS and STATA training, generic skills etc. In lieu of the second and third block, individual students may visit laboratories at the University of Bonn or other cooperating institutes in Germany or abroad.
At the end of module 1 and 2 exams are held. Student are required to take courses which, in total, amount to at least 50 ECTS-Credits (ECTS = European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). The courses and their ECTS-credits are available here for download. Students are required to finalize course module 1 and 2 and pass their exams prior to undertaking their field research. If a student fails an exam, he/she has a second chance. If a student fails twice, or in two exams, or achieves less than 50 ECTS-credits, the ZEF Directorate will decide if the student can continue to study at ZEF. The successful participation in the courses is a prerequisite for a doctoral degree supported by ZEF.
During the first 6-12 months of residence in Bonn, the students are also expected to work with their tutor/major professor in fine-tuning their proposals, developing the necessary budgets, and organizing the infrastructure and host-country/institutional arrangements to conduct their field research. The proposal is presented to the scholars in residence and the interested faculty for comments and suggestions before clearance is given to travel abroad.
German Language Course
In August, the German Language Course is part of the International Summer School (International Summer Course for German Language, Literature und Cultural Studies) organised by the International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) of the University of Bonn. The Summer Course wants to give participants a comprehensive and practical understanding of German culture and traditions as well as to contribute to fostering international friendships. There are around 200 participants from across the globe to join its traditional Summer Course. The participants will get a chance to experience one of Germany's oldest and largest universities. What is more, you will enjoy staying in Bonn, a city proud of its 2000 years of history. It is the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven. As the former seat of government, it still houses various governmental institutions and is also called a "Federal City". You will see, Bonn has a lot to offer to international visitors as regards history, culture and politics. The four-week Summer Course in August offers German language classes at different levels. The classes will take place in the main building of the University (the castle) in the morning and working groups as well as excursions in the afternoon.
