1. A Social Science Perspective on Development: Development Theory, Practice and Research Methods (ZEFa)

Course Coordinator:       Aram Ziai

The Disciplinary Doctoral Program of ZEFa (see course plan below) consists of altogether nine weeks of modular training courses.

Module 1 - Statistic, Questionnaire Design and Survey Conduction
Module 2 - Development Research and Practice
Module 3 - Qualitative Research Methods
Module 4 - Development Cooperation
Module 5 - Skills training

In the first two weeks, the students are taught quantitative methods together with their batch fellows from ZEFb and ZEFc. In the following weeks, a range of development theories and theoretical approaches that repeatedly are applied in our research projects are discussed. The course has an intense training component of social science methods and academic skills. In the course's final week, the students are offered an insight into German and European development practice. This includes several office visits of state and non-state organizations of national and international development cooperation.

Additionally, the students participate in a weekend seminar 'Intercultural Training'. Here special emphasis is given to aspects of intercultural communication in Germany, the research projects and project teams as well as the research countries.

The course ends with a two hours written examination.
