Effects of Protected Area formation on local people's livelihood,
security and people-wildlife relationship. Case study of a Protected
Area in India.
The existing tensions between people and the Forest Department (FD)
& the people and wildlife in the protected areas (PAs) in India can
be attributed to the conservation policies prevailing in India till
date. Even with a shift in conservation policy in the late 1980s emphasising
people's participation, conflict and tensions have been escalating
resulting in clashes between people and the FD. This has seriously
threatened the PAs both in terms of having a detrimental effect on
the wildlife and on people's livelihood and questioned the legitimacy
of having PAs sans?? the local people's involvement in its protection.
The research undertaken highlights the problems people face when an
area is declared into a PA and the resulting problems, and stresses
the need for genuine power sharing between the people and the FD for
the better management of the PA and preservation of wildlife.
