Curriculum Vitae
Erich Weede, born 1942, is Professor of Sociology at the University of Bonn, Germany. In 1966 he made his diploma in psychology at the University of Hamburg. In 1970 he received his Ph.D. and in 1975 his Venia Legendi in political science at the University of Mannheim. From 1978 to 1997 he was professor of sociology at the University of Cologne, Germany. In 1982/83 he was President of the Peace Science Society (International), and in 1985/86 Vice President (International) of the International Studies Association. In fall-winter 1986/87 he was Visiting Professor of International Relations at the Bologna Center of the Johns Hopkins University. He is a member of the editorial boards of ‘International Interactions’, ‘Journal of Conflict Resolution’, ‘New Asia’ and ‘Pacific Focus’.

He has published ten books: Weltpolitik und Kriegsursachen im 20. Jahrhundert (Muenchen: Oldenbourg, 1975); Hypothesen, Gleichungen, Daten (Kronsberg/Taunus: Athenaeum, 1977); West German Elite Views on National Security and Foreign Policy Issues (together with Dietmar Schoessler, Koenigstein/Taunus: Athenaeum, 1987); Entwicklungslaender in der Weltgesellschaft (Opladen: Westdeutscher Verlag, 1985); Konfliktforschung (Opladen: Westdeutscher Verlag, 1986); Wirtschaft, Staat und Gesellschaft (Tuebingen: Mohr 1990); Mensch und Gesellschaft (Tuebingen: Mohr 1992); Economic Development, Social Order and World Politics - with special emphasis on War, Freedom, the Rise and Decline of the West, and the Future of East Asia (Boulder, CO: Lynne Rienner, 1996); Asien und der Westen: Politische und kulturelle Determinanten der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung (Baden-Baden: Nomos 2000); Mensch, Markt und Staat (Stuttgart: Lucius und Lucius 2003). He contributed more than one hundred and sixty papers to a variety of American, European, and Asian publications - about half in English, and half in German. His main research topics are deterrence and causes of war; violence, rebellion and revolution; determinants and correlates of economic growth rates and income distributions in cross-national perspective; and comparative civilizations (with special emphasis on Asia).
