Objectives

Funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) ZEF and the Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER) cooperate to establish and run the Program for Development Studies at the University of Ghana (UG). The program is part of the Ghanaian-German Center for Development Studies and Health Research at the University of Ghana that also involves the cooperation of the School for Public Health (UG) and the Section for Tropical Medicine of the University of Heidelberg.

Given the profile of ISSER and the expertise of ZEF, the cooperation of both institutes raises high expectations with regard to the quality of teaching and the quality of scientific research. The program enhances the teaching and research capacities at ISSER in order to train future policy makers and development practitioners from Ghana and other African countries. It will also provide fresh university graduates from Africa with the opportunity to extend their education on the continent. The program focuses on Development Studies as Ghana and other African countries are still confronted with important problems with regard to their social, economic, and political development.

The establishment of the Center of Excellence will build on five pillars:

  1. Ph.D program: » more
  2. Staff development at ISSER: » more
  3. Enhanced research infrastructure at ISSER:
    » more
  4. Development of joint research projects: » more
  5. Academic exchange and networking: » more

Future perspectives:

In the initial phase of the establishment of the Center of Excellence, ZEF's continuous support in curriculum development, the preparation of teaching materials, actual lecturing and student tutoring is meant to guarantee the quality of teaching and research. The expansion and enhancement of research infrastructure such as ISSER's library and the computer lab as well as the establishment of a PhD research group, will contribute to an inspiring academic atmosphere. PhD candidates, who are recruited among top-quality students in Africa, but who often also come from government institutions and research institutes, are not only undergoing sound academic teaching in the area of Development Studies, but are also exposed to training modules targeting their leadership and management skills. Members of ISSER staff, whose capacities will be continuously developed through the participation in capacity building courses in Ghana and Germany, will provide training in areas such as proposal development, project planning, fund-raising and financial management and will enhance the presentation and writing skills of the students. This will ensure that the Ghanaian-German Center for Development Studies not only provides excellence in academic training, but also prepares candidates for their roles as future leaders in the development of their ountries.
