Thesis title

Family Farming and Food Insecurity in Ethiopia: The Role of Risks and Institutions in Biomass-Based Value Webs in Jimma area

Thesis abstract

Family farms are the main sources of agricultural products for consumption and marketing in Ethiopia. However, family farming households are among the most food insecure in the society. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to generate empirical evidences on the challenges to reduce food insecurity among family farming households through improved biomass-based value webs. The study will focus on the risk perception and response strategy of family farming households in Jimma zone, Southwestern Ethiopia. The study will use mixed methods approaches that will use both quantitative and qualitative methods and data to generate the required empirical evidence. The selection of study areas and households (for household survey) follows a stratified simple random sampling technique. This study will use a risk governance framework as its conceptual framework and will address the constructivists and realists perspective of risk perception. The results of this study will be important inputs for policy makers, risk communicators, development actors and researchers.
