Intercultural initiative "Safar" brings Afghan classical music to Bonn and Berlin

Concerts feature master musicians, a panel discussion looks at politics and cultural heritage

Five Afghan master musicians, three German Jazz and Pop musicians, one project: "Safar - Afghanistan Meets Germany". Coordinated through the FRANZ LISZT University of Music in Weimar, the project is an experiment in intercultural exchange through music for students, professional musicians and the general public.

Free concerts by the 8-musician ensemble, blending their diverse generes, will be held at the Deutsche Welle in Bonn on July 10 (Gremiensaal, 7:30 pm) and at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin on July 12 (8 pm).

In conjunction with the musical performance, Bonn will host a panel discussion on the nexus between music and politics in Afghanistan, as well as the efforts of the Afghan National Institute of Music (ANIM) and its partners to inspire a new generation of Afghan classical musicians and protect Afghanistan's rich cultural heritage.

The discussion will take place on Monday, 9 July at 7:00 pm at the Schumannhaus (in English and German).

The panel will be composed of:

  • Dr. Ahmad Sarmast, Director of the Afghan National Institute of Music (ANIM)
  • Christine Merkel, Head of the Culture Department at the German UNESCO Commission
  • Prof. Dr. Tiago de Oliveira Pinto, Head of the Transcultural Music Studies Department at FRANZ LISZT University
