Prof. Dr. Jan Börner

Professional experience

Jan Börner is an interdisciplinary environmental economist with a doctoral degree in agricultural economics from the University of Bonn (2006). Before joining ZEF in 2012 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Munich Technical University (2005-2006), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT, 2007-2010 ), and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR, 2010-2012) based in Brazil.

Börner has research and project experience in Europe, Latin America, and Africa. Much of his research focuses on nature conservation, rural development, and sustainable innovation in the bioeconomy. His work is published in a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary science journals. He is Co-editor of the Agricultural Economics, the journal of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE) and serves as advisory board member for the German Institute for Development Evaluation (DEval) and The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO). In past and current advisory roles, he informed environmental policy decisions and international cooperation activities in Europe and South America.

Börner is also Professor for Economics of Sustainable Land Use and Bioeconomy at the Institute for Food and Resource Economics (ILR) and Co-Speaker of the Transdisciplinary Research Area “Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Futures” at the University of Bonn.
