Interview with Dr. Ihtiyor Bobojonov

Dr. Ihtiyor Bobojonov did his PhD research at ZEF from October 2004 until December 2008. His thesis was on "Modeling Crop and Water Allocation under Uncertainty in Irrigated Agriculture. A Case Study on the Khorezm Region, Uzbekistan".

Why did you come to ZEF?

I came to ZEF because ZEF has a project in my home region Khorezm, Uzbekistan, dealing with economic development and environmental improvement. In addition, I saw an excellent opportunity to improve my knowledge on modeling in Germany and to use this knowledge to better analyze the problems in my home region.

What was the main asset of doing your PhD research at ZEF?

The main advantage was to learn to do research in an interdisciplinary way. ZEF provides its students with the chance to do their disciplinary structured PhD study while working together with the students from other disciplines. Due to ZEF's supervision and tutoring concept, I worked very closely with my supervisor and tutor. This gave me a good opportunity to gain more research experience, in addition to what I learned from participating in the disciplinary and disciplinary courses at ZEF.

Tell us something your field research…

I did my field research in my home region Khorezm. Visits of my first supervisor Ernst Berg and tutor Marc Mueller were very important to the success of my study. These visits gave them more insight into the problems in my region and my research work.

What was the main outcome of your PhD study?

The study findings showed that farmers remain unable to fully implement necessary risk coping strategies. This is due to the fact that more than 70% of the agricultural area is still managed by the state order system, prescribing production targets and crops. Thus, low income crops, including cotton and winter wheat, prevail. The study results suggest economic and ecological development could be generated if more flexible decision making at the farm level is made possible.

Ihtiyor, what are you going to do after graduation?

I am looking forward to continuing my research in the scope of the ZEF Uzbekistan project. With the experience gained at ZEF as well as at the Agricultural Faculty I will have a chance to further improve the model I have developed during my PhD research. Thus, I hope to contribute to finding solutions for my economically and ecologically trouble struck home region!

Ihtiyor Bobojonov received his PhD degree from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bonn under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ernst Berg, Prof. Dr. Karin Holm-Müller and PD Dr. Christopher Martius on December 12 2008.
