The Global South Studies Center Cologne holds a public lecture from April to July, 2016. It covers various issues regarding mobility, diversity and modernism. Global Processes are looked at from the perspective of the peripherial and the feeling of alienness, while topics such as nature conservation in crisis and health challenges in urban transition are also covered.

The next lecture will aim to rethink European Expansion from 1450 to 1850, especially taking into account the issues of competition and diversity.

The lecture series takes place every Wednesday from 17:45-19:15 in Cologne.

The current refugee crisis has not only severely affected many European countries, but, as an exceptionally massive and quick movement of millions of people, it has also called for new reflections and reassessment of migration in general. The proposed issue offers an opportunity for authors to join the ongoing international debate on migration through contributions targeting both sides of the problem: migration, in its various forms, as a socio-economic, political, security, and cultural phenomenon and, at the same time, as a topic of academic debate. The articles should focus on migration in North America, Europe, and Eurasia throughout the modern history up to the present. Contributions covering transnational aspects of migration will also be welcome.

The articles will be published in a 2016 special edition of the Czech academic journal Acta Universitatis Carolinae – Studia Territorialia.

The web magazine Voices from Around the World presents short analyses, interventions, and other contributions to urgent questions of the Global South – and Global North. The magazine, which was launched by the Global South Studies Center (GSSC) of the University of Cologne (Germany) in 2015, moves beyond rigid spatial, temporal as well as disciplinary boundaries. It aims to kick-start fresh debates by presenting views from thinkers around the globe.

One of the web magazine’s unique features is its format. Transgressing traditional academic-style writing, contributors are free to approach each topic in a variety of outlets be it academic texts, essays, interviews, poems, pictures, art expressions or (music) videos. The magazine also acts as a forum for interdisciplinary conversations across a wide variety of social sciences and humanities.

Migration is one of the most popular strategies of coping with poverty among citizens from the Caucasus. In addition to economic factors, migration forms a set of practices aimed at securing social security and personal development. Political changes and economic crises within host countries affect migration patterns and the circulation of goods. At the same time, migration dynamics have an impact on changes in border policy, attitude towards migrants and labour market regulations. In this light, the organizers are interested in how migration chains and communities are built and how they function.

The conference will take place at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany from November 18-19, 2016.

On the occasion of the centennial of the Russian Revolution, the organizers seek to discuss the global context and repercussions of the revolution in particular while debating the role of revolutions in global history in general. They also encourage to explore the relationship between empire and revolution and to challenge still influential narratives, like the supposedly universal trend from “empire to nation” through a comparative and global perspective on empires and imperial societies.

Please note that, at this stage, it is only proposals for whole panels, rather than for isolated papers, that are sought.

The congress will take place from August 31 - September 3, 2017 at the Central European University and Corvinus University in Budapest.

The study of East Asia is implicitly situated within a comparative approach to China and the Sinitic culture. What other “strange parallels” (Lieberman) could possibly be operational to set a “comparative gesture” (Robinson 2011) that would not be determined by usual ‘sino-style’ conceptions of Asia? How to trigger new connections and parallels in area studies? In partnership with a number of universities and institutions, IIAS and its partners set out to address this “comparative gesture” by initiating a deliberate by-pass of dominant geometries and meta-narratives.

The conference is conceived as an exploratory exercise to identify points of connections in which scholars of Vietnam and Korea could confront their work and engage their paradigms. An underlying question this conference aims to address will be: How the Korean and Vietnamese states and their civil societies, concepts that shaped during the tributary system, became formulated during the modernization period?

This call for papers addresses an international and interdisciplinary audience in the field of "Migration & Environmental Change". Under the auspices of the project "New Regional Formations: Rapid Environmental Change and Migration in Coastal Regions", this CFP invites contributions from the broader field of social and political sciences as well as migration studies focusing on the interplay of environmental change with processes of regional transformation.

The aim of the conference is to discuss the dimensions and dynamics of the nexus between environmental change and migration and mobility, with a particular focus on the situation of coastal areas. Researchers are welcome to submit papers on the various aspects in which the nexus between (coastal) environmental change and migration and mobility is experienced and interpreted in societies around the World, and in particular in South East Asia and Western Africa.

The conference will be held from December 8-9, 2016 at Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space in Berlin.

The Institute of East-Asian Studies (IN-EAST) and the Käte Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research (KHK/GCR21), both research institutes at the University of Duisburg-Essen, jointly offer up to four six-month fellowships in 2016/2017.

The common theme for the collaboration of both host institutions and for the fellowships is "Trans-border Cooperation in East Asia at the Regional/Global Interface". They are especially interested in studies that link up questions of governance and cooperation on global and regional issues with existing or emerging and innovative patterns of organizational/institutional design in East Asia. In this vein, they welcome theoretical as well as empirical contributions from the Social Sciences (Sociology and Political Science, Economics, Business, Law and Psychology) or the Humanities.

The GIGA is an independent social-science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. It combines this region-specific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, growth and development, peace and security, and power and ideas.

The GIGA seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Applications are invited for a full-time position, with a contract of 2 years, preferably starting 1 August 2016.

It is dedicated to innovative research on different concepts of global order, security, governance, or de-velopment in Africa, Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East. They particularly welcome an inter-disciplinary approach.

Das Zentrum für Osteuropa- und internationale Studien wird im Laufe des zweiten Halbjahres 2016 seine Arbeit aufnehmen.

The SUPRA Nordic scholarship is one of the most important features of the Nordic Institute for Asian Studies' Support Programme. It is designed to make NIAS’ digital library and other resources accessible to PhD candidates and MA students in the Nordic countries. The scholarship covers inexpensive travel to and from Copenhagen and accommodation in a NIAS room at Nordisk Kollegium, with full board for a period of two weeks.

The students will have at their disposal a suitably equipped work place, and access to all the facilities at NIAS. They will be encouraged to interact with NIAS researchers and will have the opportunity to make a short lunchtime presentation for NIAS staff and receive expert advice.
