Awards and prizes to project members

Dr. Ihtiyor Bobojonov is the winner of this year´s Prize for the best Doctoral Thesis at ZEF between January 2007 and May 2009. The prize was awarded during the 10-years anniversary conference of ZEF's graduate program BiGS-DR, during the reception at the Bonn Town Hall, October 1 2009.
Dr. Bobojonov, an Agro-Economist, wrote his thesis on “Modeling Crop and Water Allocation under Uncertainty in Irrigated Agriculture in Khorezm, Uzbekistan”; he defended in December 2008.

Asia Khamzina received the Robert Bosch Junior Professorship during a festive academic hour in Berlin on Friday March 6, 2009. Prof. Toepfer, former Chairman of the ZEF board and retired Director General of UNEP spoke the laudation. The Jr. Professorship allows Dr. Khamzina to assemble a research group to study the potential of afforestation in the lower Amudarya region in Central Asia using the Clean Development Mechanism as an incentive. Prof. Vlek attended the ceremony and festivities.

Kirsten Kienzler -First place for oral presentation at the International Annual Meetings of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America (A-C-S) in New Orleans, Louisiana, Nov. 4-8, 2007. Title: "Influence of Nitrogen Sources and Timing on Fertilizer Uptake Efficiency of Irrigated Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in Central Asia".

In January 2007 John Lamers the project coordinator in Uzbekistanwas awarded the distinction of Honorable Professor of Urgench State University.

Nodir Djanibekov - Best Poster at the Tropentag 2006 - Prosperity and Poverty in a Globalized World – Challenges for Agricultural Research, University of Bonn, Germany, October 11 - 13 for exeptional contribution for the poster on "Economic Analysis of Agricultural Reforms in Khorezm Region (Uzbekistan)".

Prof Paul L.G. Vlek has been awarded the honorable professorship of the University of Urgench on June, 8 2005. An official inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of the members of the Science Council of the University of Urgench. 

Caleb Wall has been awarded a GEO-4 Fellowship by UNEP. He was invited as a GEO Fellow for the first Chapter 10 meeting, which took place on September 7-9 2005 in New York. The second meeting he will attend is the second production and author's meeting on GEO-4 in Nairobi in March 2006.
