Training workshop in Uzbekistan

ZEF co-organized a training workshop in Uzbekistan on Challenges of sustainable water use in arid and semi-arid regions under conditions of climate change.

The international workshop took place in Tashkent/Urgench from September 28 until October 1 2009 and was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
The workshop was co-organized by the ZEF/UNESCO Project, the Regional Center for Urban Water Management (RCUWM) in Teheran, and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, Regional Office for Central Asia and the Caucasus and Program Facilitation Unit (ICARDA-PFU), Tashkent.
Around 30 participants from Afghanistan, Germany, India, Iran, Oman, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan participated.

World Congress on Agroforestry

The 2nd World Congress on Agroforestry took place on 23-28 August 2009 in Nairobi, Kenya. This major event served as a forum for more than 1400 researchers, educators, practitioners and policy makers from almost 100 countries around the world to share new research findings and ideas in the field of agroforestry. The overall Congress theme entitled "Agroforestry - The Future of Global Land Use" consisted of three sections addressing (i) Food Security and Livelihoods, (ii) Conservation and Rehabilitation of Natural resources and (iii) Policies and institutions and presented at keynote/ plenary talks, symposia and technical sessions.

Drs. John Lamers and Asia Khamzina, co-chaired a technical session “Agroforestry for salinity control, and land rehabilitation” and presented findings of Khorezm project on sequential agroforestry (afforestation) for rehabilitation of marginalized cropland and for improving rural livelihoods. Presentations at the conference:
A. Khamzina “Afforestation for reclamation of degraded cropland in northwest Uzbekistan”
J.P.A. Lamers “Assessing the potential for small-scale afforestation on the saline irrigated drylands of Central Asia: An economic analysis”.


ZEF participated in 5th World Water Forum 2009: "Bridging Divides for Water". The 5th World Water Forum was held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 16 to 22 March 2009.

Iskandar Abdullaev (Senior Researcher in the ZEF/UNESCO Uzbekistan project) and Ahmad Manschadi (Project coordinator of the ZEF/UNESCO project) participated in the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul, Turkey: www.worldwatercouncil.org/index.php.

Abdullaev presented a paper at the session on Government Issues (open space) titled “Socio-technical analysis of water management: a methodology and its application in Uzbekistan. A case study from the Khorezm region.” (Authors: Iskandar Abdullaev, Peter Mollinga, Ahmad Manschadi). His participation was funded by the PAID program of WWF 5.

Manschadi presented the ZEF/UNESCO project in Uzbekistan within the framework of Topic 2.4. “Multiple use and functions of water services”.

The 5th World Water Forum was organized by the Turkish Ministry of the Environment and Forests, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the City of Istanbul and the World Water Council. The WWF is one of the main international conferences and a major event on Water related issues. The fourth WWF, taking place in Mexico in 2006, was attended by around 15,000 experts from all over the world.


Innovation Asia Pacific Symposium

Anna-Katharina Hornidge (Senior Researcher in the project) participated in the 'Innovation Asia Pacific Symposium' which took place from May 4-7 2009 in Kathmandu, Nepal. She presented a paper on ‚Follow the Innovation‘ - A Joint Experimentation & Learning Approach to Transdisciplinary Innovation Research and presented the FTI work as well as the project in a Market Exhibition.


From September 1-4 2005, the INTAS “Aral Sea Basin and Food Conference” (ABWF) took place in Amaty, Kazakhstan. Christopher Martius was part of the scientific committee that prepared this conference. The project was represented by the following presentations:

Video conferences

The members of the Uzbekistan project participated in a video conference on the topic "Water and soil saving technologies and their suitability for small holder, private farmers of Khorezm within the Aral Sea Basin".

This conference was organized by the State University of Urgench (UrSU), Khorezm, in collaboration with the ZEF/UNESCO project in Urgench and was attended by the following institutions: Soil Science Institute of Uzbekistan, Uzbek Cotton Research Institute, TIIM, University Tashkent, UrSU, ZEF Bonn, and Waageningen University and Research Center, The Netherlands.

March 12, 2004

Local scientists from Tashkent and Urgench State University, together with their German counterparts, organized a videoconference on ground water management entitled „Ground water, Burden or Benefit for the Ecosystems of Khorezm within the Aral Sea Basin“.

This videoconference, funded by UNESCO, provided a platform of exchange for experts from ZEF in Bonn (Germany), the Hydrogeology institute in Alma-Aty (Kazakhstan) and the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers (TIIAME) in Tashkent. It made a valuable contribution to strengthen the environment research knowledge.
