Training for AGOS
As a follow-up of a small project funded by UNDP and GEF a large group of students from the President’s Academy in Tashkent visited the ZEF/UNESCO Khorezm project and the NGO KRASS on October 29-30. For the past months ZEF, KRASS and UrDU have been elaborating a training module for the President’s Academy on ‘State management of environmental protection’, covering 12 topics such as: global climate change and its impact in Uzbekistan, ecological stability and security in Uzbekistan, ecological management, ecological culture of the population, modern methods in environmental management, etc.

GTZ-ZEF/UNESCO Symposium
During October 20-22, ZEF in Uzbekistan co-hosted the first symposia on 'Agricultural Service Provision in Newly Independent States of the Former Soviet Union' together with GTZ Uzbekistan (who funded most of the symposia), the NGO KRASS and the State University in Urgench, Khorezm.

Developing capacity in the fields of GIS and remote sensing
The State University of Urgench (UrDU) in Uzbekistan organized a workshop in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques and remote sensing methodology for university staff from August 24 to September 3, 2010. The workshop, taking place in Urgench, was organized in cooperation with the ZEF/UNESCO Khorezm project based in Urgench and the University of Würzburg, Germany.

World Environment Day 2010 in Urgench, Uzbekistan
On June 5th, the ZEF/UNESCO project in collaboration with its partners organized at the State University Urgench, World Environment day, 2010. This day was initiated in 1972 by the United Nations (UN) to enhance worldwide the awareness of the environment and call for actions, locally and globally.

ZEF/UNESCO project at the Uzbek parliament
On May 21, the ZEF/UNESCO project in Uzbekistan was invited by the permanent committee on Agrarian and Water Issues from Uzbekistan’s parliament (Oliy Majis) and the national farmer association (represented by Mr. T. Bazarov), the Ministry for Agriculture and Water Resources (represented by deputy Minister Prof. Sh. Nurmatov) to present and discuss selected innovations stemming from the project research. The meeting gathered 20 members of the parliament (from 4 parties plus the National Environmental Movement), about 20 scientists from national research organisations and educational institutions, and about 25 farmers and the head of the Farmer Association in Uzbekistan.

Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan visits ZEF
On May 20th the ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan, His Excellency Dilshod Akhatov and his first secretary Mr. Mavlon Mamirov visited the Center for Development Research (ZEF). They were welcomed by Prof. Joachim von Braun, Prof. Solvay Gerke and Dr. Ahmad Manschadi (scientific coordinator of the Uzbekistan Project at ZEF). Several scientists from the Uzbekistan Project also attended the meeting.
In his welcome speech Prof. von Braun emphasized the excellent scientific collaboration between Uzbek Universities and ZEF and pointed at the successful cooperation which resulted over the years in about 30 highly talented Uzbek students participating in the Doctoral Program of ZEF. Prof. Gerke acknowledged the excellent collaboration between Uzbek and German partners in the Uzbekistan Project and emphasized the need for strengthening the social sciences at the universities in Uzbekistan.

ZEF’s Khorezm Project Team reviews its performance for participatory approaches to innovation validation
In the two-day intensive Workshop ‘Interim Monitoring and Review of FTI process’, eleven scientists and research assistants of ZEF’s Khorezm/Uzbekistan Project (Phase III) came together from April 28 to 30 to discuss key challenges they faced while working towards the validation of innovations in partnership with key stakeholders.

Capacity Development
On May 28, 2010 Usman Khalid Awan from Pakistan successfully defended his PhD thesis with the title "Coupling hydrological and irrigation schedule models for the management of surface and groundwater resources in Khorezm, Uzbekistan".
