We are pleased to invite you to our next Public Lecture at ZEF with

Dr. habil. Rüdiger Grote, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research (<link http: www.imk.kit.edu english index.php>KIT-IMK), on

The biogeochemical model LandscapeDNDC: Objective, design and application for planted forest ecosystems.

Date: Wednesday, December 3, 2014, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Venue: ZEF, Walter-Flex-Straße 3, 53111 Bonn, ZEF’s right conference room, ground floor

Abstract:
Future climate and air chemistry will provide a totally new set of environmental conditions which will consequently lead to biosphere responses not observed anywhere or any time before. Thus, growth and development of vegetation cannot be derived from previous observations, requiring designing and implementing models from first principles. Process-based biogeochemical models are estimating plant growth and development from physiological knowledge as well as physical and chemical process descriptions that dynamically describe micro-environmental conditions. LandscapeDNDC is such a model. It calculates above- and belowground boundary conditions and its impact on carbon, nutrient and water uptake, allocation and release. As one of only few models of such detail it is considering natural and anthropogenic influences and is able to represent land-use changes consistently (i.e. also considering long-term impacts of the previous land-use). Apart from general principles and model description, the presentation will introduce recent applications at short rotation forests and managed forest ecosystems. The examples will demonstrate how a model such as LandscapeDNDC can help achieving research objectives and will highlight specific challenges and envisaged developments.
