Topic: The role of prosocial preferences for climate adaptation Empirical evidence from fast and slow onset climate hazards

Speaker: Prof. Björn Vollan (University of Marburg)

Abstract More and more people around the globe experience climate hazards. For vulnerable populations, these hazards not only cause significant physical damages, but can also affect the way people interact with each other. How such interactions are affected by climate hazards is particularly important for understanding the vulnerability of communities and the potential for adaptation to climate change. Prosocial behavior is key for communities that heavily rely on informal social support to deal with these threats and for cooperative solutions to provide and maintain public goods. My talk presents evidence of both short-term and long-term changes in prosociality following fast-onset and slow-onset climate hazards. The results are mixed, showing increase in pro-sociality by both fast- and slow-onset events in the short-term but decrease or insignificant effects on pro-sociality in the longer term. I try to reconcile the findings and discuss potential implications of endogenous preferences for adaptation and migration aspiration.
