ZEF Public Lecture on From Virtual to Real – Effect Sizes of CO2 footprints in Food Choices
January 23, 2025 | 12:30 h - 13:30 h
Topic: From Virtual to Real – Effect Sizes of CO2 footprints in Food Choices
Speaker: Jun.-Prof. Dr. Dominic Lemken, Tenure-Track Professor at the Institute of Food and Resource Economics, Bonn University.
Abstract: This presentation examines the translation of findings from virtual experimental environments to real-world consumer behavior, with a focus on the effect sizes of CO₂ footprint labels on food choices. It discusses critical preconditions for successful labeling initiatives in public policy and presents empirical evidence, particularly emphasizing the limitations of virtual choice experiments in accurately predicting consumer behavior. The presentation underscores the need for greater realism in experimental designs and advocates for innovative approaches beyond purchase behavior to enhance the effectiveness of environmental labeling and improve the evaluation of labeling policy outcomes.
Jun.-Prof. Dr. Dominic Lemken studied Nutrition and Economics at the Universities of Bonn and Wageningen. From 2014 to 2022, he was at the University of Göttingen, where he earned his doctorate in Agricultural and Food Marketing and later served as a Postdoctoral Fellow. In 2022, he returned to Bonn as a Tenure-Track Professor at the Institute of Food and Resource Economics. His research, supported by DFG, BMBF, and BMEL funding, focuses on sustainable behavior, food choices, and nutrition policy.
The presentation will be in hybrid mode; the in-house colleagues are expected to attend in person. Please be also invited to join us for coffee/tea and cookies after the public lecture.
