January 28, 2015 | 12:30 h - 13:30 h

Crossroads Asia Lecture and Senior Research Colloquium by Markus Kaiser

Abstract:

Eurasia – the landmass of the two continents Asia and Europe – is shaped by migration and remigration. Migrants and migratory groups adopt and resist to challenges and expectations by the mobility itself or the receiving society. They perform resilient and innovative strategies of survival. They are resilient in a way by maintaining their culture(s), system(s) of belief, traditions, way of life etc. They are innovative being open for change, being transformers, innovators, entrepreneurs themselves. Adoption, change and/or innovation vs. resistance, continuity and/or resilience have to be seen as part of the migratory agency. Thus, they contribute to the formation of new societal figurations.

The aim of this paper is to discuss new theoretical approaches, methodologies and empirical research results on immigration, transmigration and re-migration topics on the background of changing Eurasian migration regimes and discourses since the fall of the iron curtain until today.
