About the speaker:<link www.worldbank.org/en/about/people/klaus-deininger&gt;
Dr. Klaus Deininger</link> is a Lead Economist in the World Bank’s Development Economics Group. He has published extensively on income and asset inequality, land policies, land access (incl. large scale land acquisition), and land markets and their impact on household welfare, productivity of land use, and local governance. His work aims to highlight land as a key development issue, inform the World Bank’s operational approach to it, and build local analytical capacity to support an inclusive and evidence-based policy dialogue. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota, an MA in Agricultural Economics from the University of Berlin, and an MA in theology from the University of Bonn.

Abstract:
Although nature and magnitude of (positive or negative) spillovers from large farm establishment are hotly debated, most evidence relies on case studies. Combining Ethiopia’s large farms census with eleven years of a nation-wide smallholder survey allows us to quantify such spillovers relying on intertemporal changes in smallholders’ proximity or and exposure to large farms (overall or growing the same crop) for identification. We find evidence of modest positive spillovers with respect to use of fertilizer and improved seed, yields, and risk coping but not on job creation. Implications for policy and research in Ethiopia and beyond are drawn out.

Entrance to the lecture is free, no registration is required.

We are looking forward to seeing you at ZEF on January 29!
