Access to drinking water and sanitation in fast-growing economies
Workshop at ZEF on Urban climate change adaptation: Access to drinking waterand sanitation in fast-growing economies.
Date: December 13-14, 2012
Climate change is aggravating the already fragile water accessibility in terms of quality and quantity for large populations in fast-growing economies such as China and India but also some countries in Africa.
Lack of access to clean drinking water resources is increasing the spread of water-related diseases drastically. Thus, systematic research on climate change impact and its role in the water and human health nexus is urgently needed.
The workshop continued the research efforts undertaken so far within the International Consortium for Comparative Water and Development Studies (ICCWaDS), in which ZEF has been collaborating with SOAS in London and the University of Wageningen, the Netherlands, since 2011.
The workshop participants were academics, government and NGO representatives from England, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Key outcomes of the workshop included:
- The task force on "Water and Health" was strengthened
- Abstracts were finalized for a special issue on "Water and Health" for a peer-reviewed journal
- Finalized concept for a funding proposal to be submitted in January 2013
- Agreement to develop a joint "Water and Health" educational module
- Identification of further funding opportunities
