Abstract: Water, nutrition, health and gender are closely linked, and outcomes in each of these areas could potentially be improved through a more gender and nutrition focused approach to irrigation development.

Key pathways include availability and stability of food supply during the dry season, potentially resulting in improved crop diversity, increased production of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, and overall improved access to nutrition for women and children; increased agricultural productivity and thus income; enhanced WASH environment in and around the household; and women's empowerment through improvements in income generation and decision-making power and reduced time use.

While irrigation has the potential to affect all these interlinked outcomes, poorly managed irrigation systems can increase the burden of disease, for example, through increased incidence of malaria, and pollute domestic water supplies or the environment as profitable irrigation requires the application of agro-chemicals. This presentation describes the pathways from irrigation to nutrition and presents preliminary results for a sub-set of these pathways.

This is a public lecture. Entrance is free, no registration required.
