Kaffee und Malaria - zwei Geschichten aus dem Regenwald

January 14, 2015 | 19:00 h - 20:30 h

ZEF-Director Prof. Dr. Christian Borgemeister and Dr. Juliana Jaramillo (Universität Hannover) will tell two contradictory stories about rain forests.

The destruction of tropical rain forests often goes hand in hand with an increase in infectious diseases such as malaria. This often ignored phenomenon is caused by the creation of an environment favorable for disease-carrying mosquitoes. in his talk, Prof. Borgemeister draws on studies from tropical Africa and South America.

Increasing global warming is endangering the wild coffee (Coffea arabica) in the rain forest of Ethiopia. One way to mitigate these risks is to grow coffee plants under shade trees, which also happens naturally. Dr. Jaramillo has carried out a study on this topic in Latin America and East Africa.

The lectures are held in German. Entrance is free of charge.
