Topic: Cassava Value Chain and Gender Analysis in Belize (Latin America)

Speaker: Dr. Patricia Biermayr-Jenzano (Georgetown University in Washington DC)

 

Abstract

The FAO Regional Office (RLC)in Santiago, Chile approved the Regional Study: “Analysis of Selected Value Chains with emphasis on Street Food Vendors in Belize, Guatemala and Bolivia with a Gender Perspective. The study was part of the FAO Regional Initiative 3 (RI3) about Agricultural and Food Value Chain Development “to Improve Food and Feed Systems”.

The Main Objective for the study in Belize was to determine women’s roles, gender equity and participation in the Cassava value chain, including crop production, transformation, and informal marketing (street food) to provide guidance to improve their livelihood and to offer safe food systems to the public. Several important entry points for gender consideration and improving business participation for women are discussed in the presentation and action pathways are highlighted for the country and the region as a whole.

Presenter: Dr. Patricia Biermayr-Jenzano is a gender specialist who works in the intersection of Gender and Agriculture, food security, food systems and agribusiness development. Currently, she teaches gender and agriculture for the Women and Gender Studies Program and the Center for Latin America Studies at Georgetown University in Washington DC.
