Abstract
The field of development is one of constant surprises – its reality defies the most confident policy prescriptions. The range of alternative policies is dizzying, and how they will fare in given circumstances unpredictable. Certain basics are helpful, but even these are open to question in different geographic and social environments. The speaker’s remarks will draw on life-long experience in developing countries and a career of frequently working on development programming and policy. In passing, they will contrast the development tracks on India and China after 1979. And they will aim to leave lots of time for discussion. They will also draw on a forthcoming volume (with Bruce Currie-Alder, Ravi Kanbur and Rohinton Medhora), International Development: Ideas, Practice and Prospects, Oxford, UK and New York, NY: Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2013
