Abstract:

This study describes the rapid expansion of supermarkets in Africa and analyzes the wider implications for consumer nutrition and health. In particular, the hypothesis that the “supermarket revolution” influences dietary patterns, leads to less healthy diets, and thus contributes to rising obesity and chronic diseases is tested. Household and individual level panel data from urban Kenya are used to run various regression models. The hypothesis is largely confirmed for adult populations, but not for children. For children, supermarkets rather seem to contribute to lower rates of undernutrition.
