Title: Model-based innovations to inform sustainable management and conservation of wildlife populations

Abstract:
Populations of wildlife, including birds and mammals, are dynamic in space and time. Mechanisms of these changes are unknown for many species, but are likely linked to global change including shifts in climate and land cover being induced by humans. Regardless of the driving forces for population dynamics, changes in abundance of wildlife interact with human concerns to create challenges for environmental policy and management. On one hand, declines in wildlife populations create concerns for nature conservation. On the other hand, increases in wildlife abundance can impact human safety and natural resources sectors including forestry and agriculture. Such impacts generate conflicts or disagreements between stakeholders about wildlife management. Problems involving wildlife become exacerbated when considering global- to regional-scale processes of climate change and shifts in demands for natural resources by people. Long-distance movements of highly mobile animals such as migratory species hinder our ability to understand and mitigate effects of global change on wildlife populations. I present a series of case studies highlighting ways of using modeling to inform sustainable management of wildlife populations, including spatial subsidies analysis, decision analysis, and network population modeling. The case studies range from conservation of waterfowl in North America to mitigating conflicts about large mammals in central Europe. These vignettes demonstrate how scientific models provide useful information for conservation practitioners and natural resource managers tasked with reconciling wildlife-based conflicts spanning regional to continental scales.

Brady Mattsson is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Wildlife Biology and Game Management at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria. He develops and tests approaches using collaborative decision analysis for addressing complex conservation and natural resource management issues involving wildlife. He also models population dynamics and spatial subsidies provided by migratory species within North America and Europe.
