Abstract: This presentation examines ethical and reflexive methodologies developed through seven months of ethnographic fieldwork in the bateyes of the Dominican Republic. Emphasizing positionality, critical reflexivity, ethical research practices, and a decolonial approach, the discussion explores how methodological choices shape insights into community dynamics and social relationships. By integrating local perspectives, the presentation highlights the role of researcher identity and ethics in navigating complex social interactions within these communities.
Micely Díaz Espaillat is a Junior Researcher at the ZEF Political and Cultural Change (CPC) Working Group. She is a social worker (UASD) and holds master’s degrees in International Development (University of Bath) and International Peace Studies (UPEACE).
