This year “ZEF Prize” winner Alexander J. Stein investigates qualitative solutions for the world food problem in his doctoral thesis. Stein, a young Agro Economist from Germany did his doctoral research at ZEF on the issue of "hidden hunger" and investigated the chances of a relatively new albeit promising way to combat this urgent phenomenon: Biofortification.

“Land decline in Land-Rich Africa – A creeping disaster in the making“, a paper written by ZEF senior staff Paul Vlek, Quang Bao Le and Lulseged Tamene and published by the Science Council of the CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research) tackles the issue of land degradation in sub-Saharan Africa.
