invites applications for a BMZ funded
Graduate Student Position
(German public services; Verg. Gr. IIa BAT; 19,25 hours per week; until 31.08.2009 with
possible prolongation and the opportunity to prepare a doctorate dissertation)
Area of Research:
"Preventing and containing trypanocide resistance in the cotton zone of West Africa"
Activities:
Design and implementation of an integrated control strategy for African Animal
Trypanosomosis that combines rational drug use (RDU) information dissemination with
externally supported community vector (tsetse) control. This strategy will be implemented in
selected villages comprising the drug resistance hot spots detected during phase 1 of the
project in Mali and Burkina Faso. A two-year longitudinal study will monitor key entomological
and epidemiological parameters. Mathematical models will be extended to better understand
drug resistance genesis and decay, and make confident recommendations for resistance
containment outside the study area.
Requirements:
Candidates should have a degree in Veterinary Medicine.
Candidates of any nationality can apply but there are substantial language requirements.
Project activities are conducted in French and oral and written fluency in French is required.
The thesis will be written in English and a working knowledge of English would be helpful.

epidemiology and experience in tropical countries would be beneficial.
