ZEF-researchers at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in Rome- presenting their work and meeting with Pope Francis

May 17, 2023.

The Casina Pio IV (Vatican City) hosted a workshop on "Food and Humanitarian Crises: Science and Policies for Prevention and Mitigation" from May 9-10, 2023, which was held in collaboration with the FAO and other international organizations. It was presided by ZEF distinguished Professor Joachim von Braun.

Around 30 international experts in the fields of food security and humanitarian crisis gathered at the Vatican’s premises in Rome to share their perspectives of and experiences in tackling these issues. Furthermore, they discussed preventative and mitigating policies and measures for regions affected by (armed) conflict and natural disasters.

ZEF senior researcher Dr. Fazlullah Akhtar from Afghanistan presented work on the food and humanitarian crises in Afghanistan, whereas ZEF junior researcher Oyewole Oginni from Nigeria shared insights on targeted interventions and civilian risk in food-insecure areas of the Lake Chad Basin region. ZEF senior researcher Dr. Lukas Kornher presented work on the global food crisis and its implications for actions in the context of war and pandemic shocks.

Among the group of high-ranking participants were the former prime ministers of Ethiopia, HE Hailemariam Boshe, and of Jordan, HE Dr. Omar Razzaz, chairing sessions and therewith adding valuable perspectives to the discussions. Their participation highlights the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration and partnership in addressing food security and humanitarian crises.

The discussions and presentations from the workshop will undoubtedly inform future efforts to address these critical issues around the world. See full program here.
