1. PhD student position (BAT IIa/2) in Social Science at the University of
Hohenheim
Subject: Determination of high-potential aquaculture development areas and
impact in Africa and Asia
The Ph.D. student will be responsible for the Social Science part in a larger
team of Scientist, to determine the decisive factors of adoption of fishponds
and other forms of aquaculture, as well establishment as well management
and its impact on the livelihood of concerned actors.
A multidisciplinary project is proposed which will produce a GIS-based
decision support tool which will extrapolate recommendation domains for
smallholder aquaculture development with the objective of achieving high
potential benefit. Case studies will be conducted in four countries (China,
Thailand, Ghana, Malawi) and projects in Cameroon and Bangladesh will be
included by co-operation, to identify factors and causal relationships and
necessary enabling conditions responsible for successful development of
aquaculture that will be incorporated into the decision support tool.
The candidate should have some experience in Social Sciences related to
agriculture and rural development and should contribute to methodology
development and field research in fish pond and aquaculture adoption and
diffusion research.
Research cooperation:
World Fish Centre, Penang Malaysia - University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart,
Germany - University of Kassel
Funding:
BMZ/GTZ through WFC and the University of Hohenheim
Period and research site:
2004 -2007 (36 months); Field work in different countries in South-East Asia
and East Africa, residence in Penang. Preparation and final reporting in
Hohenheim. Beginning between immediately and at the latest 1st of January
2005.
Candidate's profile:
- MSc (equivalent) degree with some background in participatory methods
and organisational development
- Experience in the tropics
- Very good knowledge of English
- Fulfils the requirements of the faculty for PhD acceptance

Payment
The candidate will be an employee of Hohenheim University, gets payed
according to BAT IIa/2, plus overseas helth insurance and a contribution to
housing costs in Penang. Running costs of research and travel costs are
reimbursed according to the budget of the programme.

Ab 01. November 2004 ist vorbehaltlich der Bewilligung der Mittel im Projekt
"Weiterentwicklung der Waldbewirtschaftungsstandards des Malaysian
Timber Certification Council unter besonderer Berücksichtung der Ansprüche
der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg" die Stelle einer wissenschaftlichen
Mitarbeiterin/eines wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiters zu besetzen.
Die Vergütung erfolgt nach II a BAT. Die wöchentliche Arbeitszeit beträgt 20,0
Stunden.
Die Befristung des Vertrages ergibt sich aus § 57 b Hochschulrahmengesetz
und ist vorgesehen bis zum 31. Oktober 2006.

Aufgaben:
Die Aufgaben umfassen wissenschaftliche Dienstleistungen im Projekt.
Außerhalb der Dienstaufgaben besteht Gelegenheit zur wissenschaftlichen
Weiterbildung, insbesondere zur Anfertigung einer Dissertation. Die eigenen,
im Projekt erzielten Arbeitsergebnisse können für die Promotion verwendet
werden.
Aufgabengebiet:
- Mitarbeit bei der Analyse der Waldbewirtschaftungsstandards des MTCC im
Hinblick auf andere, international anerkannte Systeme.
- Mitarbeit bei der detaillierten Formulierung der Anforderungen der Freien
und Hansestadt Hamburg
- Strukturierung der Ergebnisse in einer Gap Analysis
- Vorbereitung von und Teilnahme an Exkursionen, Workshops und
Sitzungen
- Monitoring der Entwicklungsarbeiten des MTCC im Hinblick auf
Verbesserung der Standards
- Dokumentation aller Ergebnisse
- Durchführung von Zwischenevaluierungen
- Repräsentanz in erheblichem Umfang in Malaysia ist erforderlich
Einstellungsvoraussetzungen:
- Abschluss eines den Aufgaben entsprechenden Hochschulstudiums
- Erfahrungen im Bereich Forstliche Zertifizierung, vorzugsweise mit MTCC
und FSC
- Erfahrungen im Bereich tropische Waldbewirtschaftung, vorzugsweise
Malaysia
- Auslandserfahrung (mind. 3 Jahre) in Südostasien
- Englischkenntnisse (fließend) und Grundkenntnisse in der Landessprache

4. Research Program Directors (Six positions), Aleppo, Syria, International
Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA)
Organization
ICARDA is a non-profit international agricultural research center in a
worldwide consortium of 15 centers, supported by the Consultative Group on
International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The CGIAR is co-sponsored by
the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,
the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the United
Nations Development Programme. With a staff of over 400 scientists and
support personnel, representing more than 40 nationalities, ICARDA
addresses two key areas of agricultural research: natural resource
management and germplasm improvement (cereals and legumes).
The Center has a global mandate for barley, lentil and faba bean
improvement, and a regional mandate for the improvement of wheat,
chickpea and forage and pasture legumes. A major emphasis is placed on
the conservation and management of land and water management, and
improved productivity of small ruminants in integrated farming systems in dry
areas. The Center's research and training programs are implemented in
partnership with national programs and with other CGIAR centers as well as
advanced research institutes in both developing and industrialized countries.
The Positions
Our newly restructured research programs for Dry Areas need Directors to
lead them in the 21st century:
1: Management of scarce water resources and mitigation of drought (INT-
P/0413/04)
Assessment of water resources and their use, and research to provide
options (technical, institutional and policy) to improve water productivity and
drought mitigation
2: Integrated gene management (INT-P/0414/04)
Conservation, improvement and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity including
barley, bread and durum wheat, lentil, fababean, chickpea and forage
legumes
3: Improved land management to combat desertification (INT-P/0415/04)
Assessment of desertification; research on technologies to manage land,
water, vegetation and rangelands and on policy and institutional options to
control degradation and combat desertification
4: Diversification and sustainable improvement of rural livelihoods (INT-
P/0416/04)
Research on options to increase income generation through diversification of
cropping systems, utilization of high-value plants species, and improved
quality and end-use value of crop and small ruminant products
5: Poverty and livelihoods analysis (INT-P/0417/04)
Research on the determinants of poverty and livelihood strategies to refine
the targeting of ICARDA's research and identify pathways out of poverty
6: Knowledge management and dissemination for sustainable development
(INT-P/0418/04)
Management of the knowledge generated by science and technology and its
alignment/linkage into use by end-users for sustainable development

The positions combine research with administration and report to the
Assistant Director General (Research). The positions are based at ICARDA's
modern headquarters and main research station, located in a rural setting 30
km from Aleppo, in Syria.
Qualifications and Experience
Earned Ph.D. in a relevant subject; a minimum of 10 years of experience in
agricultural research; proven record of excellence in a relevant scientifc
domain; at least three years of international experience in a leadership
position; ability to lead a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team,
inovativeness and experience in the developing world, a track record in donor
relations, fund raising and project development, excellent communications
skills in English. Knowledge of Arabic and/or French will be an advantage.
Terms of Appointment
The appointment will be for an initial period of one year, renewable thereafter
on an annual basis. The salary is paid in US dollars. Benefits include
housing allowance, paid home leave travel, a pension scheme, life and health
insurance package, vehicle for business and personal use, and free
enrollment for dependent children in the ICARDA-administered International
School (KG-Grade 12).
Living in Syria
In addition to the internationally-accredited school, ICARDA runs a Sports and
Social Club for the staff. Syria has many historical and archaeological sites,
some a short drive from Aleppo. There are four distinct seasons and the
terrain varies from desert to mountains to fertile fruit orchards. Turkey,
Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt can be reached by car, and Cairo is a one-hour
flight from Aleppo. Major international airlines fly to and from Damascus and
Aleppo.

Im Rahmen des German PostDoc Program fördert BMZ/GTZ den Einsatz von
deutschen wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchskräften (PostDoc) an
Internationalen Agrarforschungszentren. Nach der Vorauswahl durch GTZ
und Vertreter der deutschen tropenorientierten Agrarforschung werden die

Project description:
The project aims to strengthen the impact of multipurpose forage-based
technologies on the livelihoods of smallholders in Central-America through
research on and catalyzation of learning-selection processes to adapt and
adopt technologies by smallholder farmers. The objective is to determine how
to best organize the interaction and information flow among researchers,
technicians and farmers in order to facilitate adoption of more technologies by
more farmers.
Overall research outputs consist of the analysis and synthesis of learning-
selection processes, the diagnosis of constraints to adoption (bio-physical
and socio-economic) and identification of approaches and policies to foster
innovation.
Research will also investigate the roles of collaborating research institutes
and development agencies in catalyzing learning-selection processes and in
scaling up and out via learning alliances among NARS, CIAT, farmers and
NGOs.
Requirements:
A PhD in agriculture (plant production, animal production, economics) or
related field and experience in socio-economic analysis and participatory
research are essential. Knowledge of tropical forages and/or animal
production systems is desirable. Fluency in spoken and written English and
Spanish, and knowledge of Central America are also sought.

An der Bayerischen Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft ist ab dem 01.11.2004
die Leitung des Instituts für Ernährungswirtschaft und Markt in München neu
zu besetzen. Es handelt sich um einen Dienstposten mit einer
Beförderungsmöglichkeit bis BesGr. A 16 mit Amtszulage bzw. einer
vergleichbaren Eingruppierung nach BAT.
Der Schwerpunkt der Aufgaben liegt in der problemorientierten Forschung,
