category of the 2004 Awards Competition: Japanese Award for Outstanding
Research on Development, and the Medals for Research on Development

Dear GDN Friends:
-->> Submissions are now being extended for the Trade policies and
Sub-Saharan Africa category of the 2004 Awards Competition: Japanese Award
for Outstanding Research on Development, and the Medals for Research on
Development. The five topics for the research medals competition relate to
the theme, "Developed and developing worlds: mutual impact."
-->> The Global Development Awards is the largest international contest
for researchers on development, offering prizes totaling USD 400,000 to
scholars and practitioners based in developing countries.
Awards & Medals: 2004 Competition
• Medals for Research on Development
-->> The Medals for Outstanding Research on Development carry cash prizes
of USD 75,000 plus travel expenses to the Global Development Network’s
Sixth Annual Development Conference. Two prize medals—one for USD 10,000
plus travel and another for USD 5,000 plus travel—will be granted for
completed research papers in each of five topic areas corresponding to the
theme of the Sixth Annual Conference of the Global Development Network,
"Developed and developing worlds: mutual impact". Under each topic, GDN
welcomes submissions from all branches of the social sciences.
Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary submissions are particularly
encouraged.

• Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development
-->> The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development carries
cash prizes of USD 95,000 plus travel expenses to the Global Development
Network’s Sixth Annual Development Conference. An award of USD 75,000 will
be given to the institution whose proposed research in one of the five
topic areas chosen for this year's competition holds the greatest promise
for improving our understanding of development. Two prizes of USD 10,000
will be given to the institutions of the other two finalists to continue
work in the chosen research area. The Award funds will be used to support
the undertaking of the submitted research proposal. Funding for the Award
is generously provided by the Government of Japan. In two of the five
topic areas, namely, "Trade policies and Sub-Saharan Africa" and
"Conflict, human security and migration", submissions will be accepted in
French or English.
