PostDoc-Einsätze am IFPRI, IRRI und IITA:

Im Rahmen des German PostDoc Program fördert BMZ/GTZ den Einsatz bis zu 3

Jahren von deutschen wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchskräften (PostDoc) an

Internationalen Agrarforschungszentren der CGIAR-Gruppe und diesen

nahestehenden Agrarforschungszentren.

1. International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)

Title of the Project: Supply or Demand? Evaluation of the Family Allowance Program

(PRAF) in Honduras

Location: International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) headquarters in

Washington, DC, USA

Project description: The Honduras Family Allowance Program (PRAF) is a conditional

cash transfer program that targets poor people within the country.

The program's overall aim is to reduce poverty among the poorest households of

Honduras, by promoting school attendance and increased performance among 6-12

year old children, and improving the health and nutrition of mothers and young children

from the poorest families of Honduras. The program includes two distinct arms: 1)

incentives to increase the demand for education and health services; and 2) incentives

to improve the supply and quality of these services.

IFPRI established a partnership with the PRAF program's administration and with the

Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) to carry out a series of research, capacity

strengthening and outreach activities to strengthen the program, improve its cost-

effectiveness and evaluate its impact. The final survey to evaluate the impact of the

program will be carried out in 2005 and results will be presented and discussed in the

country and disseminated internationally in 2006.

Requirements:

- PhD in nutrition, epidemiology or health economics, focusing on developing country

issues

- Good understanding of program design, implementation, operations and evaluation

- Experience working with on linkages between poverty, food security, nutrition and

health

- Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals

2. International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)

Title of the project: Nutrient Management in Aerobic Rice

Location: International Rice Research Institute, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines

Project description:

The purpose of the project is to further develop aerobic rice systems to cope with

water scarcity and accelerate the development of management packages that could

help alleviate water scarcity for poor farmers in Asia.

The project aims to understand crop-water-nitrogen relations, gain insight into the

extent, nature, and severity of micronutrient deficiencies, develop prototype nitrogen

and micronutrient management strategies (where relevant), and identify the target

environment and boundary conditions for aerobic rice systems.

Research activities will include:

- Comparison and synthesis of experiments carried out during 2001-04 at IRRI, in

Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, and Bulacan (central Luzon , Philippines), and at Beijing (China);

- Gap-filling field experiments on crop-water-nutrient interactions, to be carried out in

northern China and in the Philippines;

- Synthesis of outcomes of the field experiments into prototype sustainable aerobic rice

production systems.

Requirements: PhD in agronomy, physiology, or agro-hydrology. Experience in rice

production systems in water-scarce environments and knowledge about crop

simulation on modeling is an advantage.

3. International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

Title of the project: Soil conservation options in the savanna of West Africa: new

approaches to assess their potential

Location: International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), with headquarters in

Ibadan, Nigeria

Project description: The goal of the program is to improve and intensify cereal-legume-

livestock systems in the moist and dry savannas of West and Central Africa

Research activities will include:

- Monitor land use intensification in pilot villages across different ecological zones, and

establish linkage to erosion features;

- Carry out an impact assessment of past soil conservation efforts in Ghana, Benin,

and Nigeria;

- Test new approaches for on-farm monitoring of short and long-term benefits derived

from soil conservation technologies. This will include the use of fallout nuclides such

as 137Cs, 210Pb and 7Be;

- Based on the results the above listed activities, the soil conservation specialist will, in

joint collaboration with other scientists in the Savannah program, prioritise intervention

areas, identify new options for sustainable land management, and develop an

implementation strategy.

Requirements:

and remote sensing, farming systems research, impact assessment, and tropical

agriculture;

- Working knowledge of French;

- Computer literacy and statistical data analysis capabilities;

- Frequent travel and willingness to work in small scale farm setting in Ghana, Benin,

and Nigeria;
