1. CONSULTANT URBAN AGRICULTURE (M/F) The Urban Agriculture Unit of ETC

Foundation is looking for a new senior team member.

 

ETC Foundation is a not-for profit development and advisory organisation. It's main

office is based in Leusden, the Netherlands and (independently managed) regional

and country offices are located in Kenya (East Africa), Peru (Andes), India, Sri Lanka

and the UK.

ETC's approach is characterised by process-based, participatory and gender-positive

working methods that build on local initiatives and knowledge, facilitate multi-

stakeholder social learning and contribute to local capacity development, sustainable

innovations and poverty alleviation.

ETC Foundation has 30 years of experience in advising national and local

governments, NGO's, universities, farmer organisations and private enterprises in a

large number of developing countries (as well as in Holland and Eastern Europe) on

sustainable development and innovation, human resource development and institution

building, transition to ecological farming, participatory agricultural research and

extension, farmer organisation, sustainable energy, public health, a/o. Involved in the

field of urban agriculture since 1994 and co-founder of the Global Support Group on

Urban Agriculture (SGUA).

ETC-Urban Agriculture is one of five Leusden based units of the ETC-Foundation and

at present is formed by 3 senior advisors, 1 junior advisor, 1 programme assistant and

1 secretary (see www.etc-urbanagriculture.org)

 

ETC-Urban Agriculture focuses on the following three strategic themes:

(a) Urban agriculture, poverty alleviation and local economic development (with special

attention for women and youth)

(b) Urban food systems, food security and nutrition (including link with HIV-Aids)

(c) Agriculture in urban planning and management (productive urban landscapes /

edible building, multi-functional peri-urban agriculture)

 

The services of ETC-Urban Agriculture include:

- Institutional strengthening of partner organisations and networks

- Capacity development and training (development of training materials, organisation of

training workshops, distance learning, exchange visits)

- Policy analysis and advocacy (fact sheets, policy papers, policy seminars, study

visits)

- Support to local multi-stakeholder processes for situation analysis, policy design and

collaborative action planning on urban agriculture

- Applied research; Monitoring and evaluation studies

- Gender analysis and mainstreaming

- Information, communication and knowledge management (maintenance of

databases, publications o/a the Urban Agriculture Magazine, RUAF-website).

Main tasks:

The consultant will be responsible for:

- Design, coordination and implementation of advisory, training, applied research and

information support activities regarding urban farming systems innovation and

participatory technology development, micro-enterprise development (processing) and

marketing (from Seed to Table approach), in close coordination with Southern partner

organisations of ETC-UA.

- Regular progress and financial reporting on assignments and projects in coordination

with the Coordinator of ETC-UA and the ETC financial department

- Maintaining good working relations with donor agencies and other sources of funding

and identification of innovative financing strategies and possibilities

- Periodic sharing of experiences with colleagues in ETC-UA and with other units and

offices of ETC-Foundation and contributions to the coaching and education of junior

staff.

- Contribution to further development of the development strategy of ETC-UA

 

Requirements

- At least ten years of experience in development cooperation

- Strong interest to assist farmer organisations, NGO's, Municipal departments and

other local stakeholders in the development of sustainable small scale farming

systems with (groups of) poor urban households

- MSc or equivalent/higher education in tropical agriculture (agronomist, horticulturist,

livestock specialist) with expertise in participatory agricultural action-research, training

and extension

- Proven ability to operate as an individual advisor and trainer in developing countries

and experience in the development of practical training materials

- Gender sensitive

- Strong network and contacts with donor agencies; proven ability for funding leverage

- Resistant to stress, creative, good sense of humour, capable of working in a team as

well as independently

- Availability to travel to a variety of countries for short missions

- Fluent in English; Good working knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Arabic is an

advantage

- Extensive computer skills (Word for windows, Excel, Access, Internet, etcetera)

 

Labour Conditions

- A 50%-100 % contract (to be negotiated) with a probationary period of six months.

- Gross salary, depending the level of education and experience, between Euro 2750

and Euro 3950 (full time) with an additional 8% holiday allowance and substantial

employer contribution to the pension scheme.

- Based in Leusden, the Netherlands or willing to be regularly present in Leusden for

extended periods

3. Vacancy announcement for a PhD position

 

The Department of Economics and Technological Change (ZEFb) of the Center for

Development Research invites applications for a PhD position beginning effective

October 01, 2006 for 3 years. The successful candidate will conduct his/her PhD as

part of the project on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Middle

Olifants sub-basin of South Africa. The work will focus on the economic aspect of

water allocation for improving IWRM in South Africa. The successful candidate is also

expected to be integrated into the existing ZEF international Doctoral studies program.

 

Requirements:

- MSc degree or equivalent in Agricultural economics, Environmental economics,

Natural resource economics or related field with excellent academic results.

- Sufficient knowledge of SPSS, STATA, LIMDEP and GAMS packages.

- Research experience on Africa, preferably in South Africa would be an advantage

- Excellent English speaking and writing skills

4. ZIL Research Programme 'Livestock systems research in support of poor people'

 

The Swiss Centre for International Agriculture (ZIL) at the ETH Zurich is looking for a

Programme Facilitator (50%)

The focus of ZIL is on 'Livestock systems research in support of poor people'. ZIL is

seeking a part-time coordinator (40%) to facilitate the activities of the ZIL members

involved in the livestock systems programme and a few independent research projects

in partnership with developing countries. The Steering Committee of the ZIL livestock

programme provides strategic guidance. The candidate will be a member of the ZIL

management team, and will work in the ZIL office. He/she will report to the ZIL

Executive Manager.

 

The remaining 10% of the position will be devoted to the coordination of the Swisswide

LivestockNet (www.livestocknet.ch).

 

Responsibilities

Programme development: Organise meetings for project participants and annual

review meetings (Progress Fora); Contribute to the development of a coherent,

interdisciplinary research programme; Synthesise research results of individual

projects as contributions to the central theme 'Sustainable land use and human well

being' in preparation of an impact assessment study.

 

Project management: Manage the process of project evaluation; act as partner of

project teams. Identify potential partners and help in establishing partnerships

(desirable).

 

Networking and communication: Foster interdisciplinary dialogue and interaction

between ZIL members and with other scientists of ETH Zurich and partner institutions;

Interact with SDC (thematic services and regional desks) to explore the demand for

livestock research; translate development demands in researchable issues. Pursue the

international livestock discussion in view of the role of ETH Zurich (desirable).

Contribute to the general mandate of ZIL and its management team.

 

LivestockNet: Manage the secretariat of LivestockNet, the Swiss network of various

stakeholders working in livestock and development. Report to the Board and President

of LivestockNet.

 

Profile

University degree with specialisation in animal sciences or related subject; experience

with developing or transition

countries; management skills; ability to conceptualise and to present ideas clearly and

concisely both orally and in writing; capacity to work in a multi-disciplinary team;

initiative and networking; computer literacy; excellent language skills (fluency in

English).
