THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA'S
TENTH ANNUAL TAX SYMPOSIUM
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
March 23 & 24, 2007
The University of North Carolina is organizing its tenth
annual symposium designed to bring together leading tax
scholars from economics, accounting, finance, law,
political science, and related fields. The symposium will
be held in Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon and Saturday
morning, March 23 & 24, 2007, and will be sponsored by the
KPMG Foundation and the UNC Tax Center. The goal is to
bring together scholars from different areas who share a
common interest in current tax research. Previous
conferences have been very successful, and we anticipate
the same this year.
PAPER DETAILS:
Papers should be well developed, but at a stage where they
can still benefit from the group's discussion. The
symposium will include no more than eight papers. Travel
and lodging expenses for presenters will be reimbursed up
to $500.
PAPERS SELECTED FOR PRESENTATION ALSO WILL BE FEATURED IN A
SPECIAL EDITION OF THE NATIONAL TAX JOURNAL, SUBJECT TO THE
USUAL EDITORIAL REVIEW.

The Mortgage Bankers Association in Washington DC has

ECONOMIST/SR. ECONOMIST:
MBA is seeking a highly motivated and qualified
Economist/Sr. Economist to have responsibility for all
research related to the single-family housing market and
the characteristics of the debt market supporting home
ownership. Primary responsibilities are to interpret and
analyze market data collected by the MBA and from other
sources, including HMDA (Home Mortgage Disclosure Act) and
AHS (American Housing Survey), and work with MBA staff,
industry representatives and other industry associations in
developing new research initiatives. Other responsibilities
are to provide support for public policy issues, and
findings to member firms, MBA management and the news
media.
DIRECTOR, INDUSTRY SURVEY:
MBA is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Director of
Industry Survey to have responsibility for the design, and
implementation for all of the single-family mortgage
industry surveys conducted by the Research and Economics
Group, including the business models for those surveys.
Primary responsibilities are to Direct the execution of
MBA's industry surveys, including the Quarterly
Originations and Servicing Survey, the Weekly Mortgage
Applications Survey, the National Delinquency Survey and
the HMDA (Home Mortgage Disclosure Act) Data on Demand
reports. This includes improving the design of the surveys
as needed, ensuring the accuracy of the data collection and
calculations, and responding to feedback from members on
ways to minimize reporting burdens. In addition, develop
and direct the revenue generation strategies for the
surveys. This includes subscription pricing, customized
report pricing and the pricing of redistribution
agreements.
SURVEY SPECIALIST:
MBA is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Survey
Specialist to have responsibility for research related to
commercial and multifamily lending, with particular
emphasis on MBA's quarterly and annual surveys. Primary
responsibilities are to manage the collection, analysis and
presentation of primary market data; collect and interpret
data from other sources; and work with MBA staff, industry
representatives and other industry associations in
developing new research initiatives. Other responsibilities
include providing information on origination and servicing
volumes, delinquency rates, CMBS and other spreads.
Provide support for public policy issues and provide
findings to member firms, MBA and CREF leadership, as well
as other MBA departments in written and oral form.

The Danish National Institute of Social Research invites
applications for two positions as a Research Professor.
JOB DESCRIPTION/QUALIFICATIONS:
We seek two outstanding scholars with an established
scientific background in:
- Application of advanced quantitative methods in one or
more areas of our research programme (Position A),
- Application of advanced methods in policy evaluation
studies, with special emphasis on quantitative analyses
of policy effects and effectiveness (Position B).
Our institute has some of the richest datasets available
for applied social research. Application of quantitative
methods will have special priority in our new research
programme and we plan to invite applicants for PhD and post
doc fellowships in the same areas to further enhance our
competencies. The research professors are expected to take
a leading position in this initiative and to take
responsibility for establishing research programmes and
other activities including:
- Supervision and advice to PhD students, post docs and
young researchers.
- Teaching at doctoral and post doctoral courses and
training seminars.
- Supervision and operation of major research projects.
- Strengthening of our international research co-operation.
- Participation in studies and evaluations of Danish policy
issues.
PROFILE:
Applicants can come from several disciplines within the
social sciences. The important requirement is a strong
record in application of advanced quantitative methods.
Applicants must have a publication record appropriate for
the position, substantial ongoing research and be involved
in international networks of researchers working in the
same field. Applicants must also have a profound ability to
cooperate and to provide inspiration and guidance for other
researchers.
A demonstrated ability to define and operate research
projects and to raise the necessary funding is desired. A
broad research experience as well as experience in teaching
and several other forms of communication of research
results is desirable.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT AND SALARY:
The positions are five-years research professorships with a
possible extension for three years. The terms of employment
will be in accordance with Danish collective agreements for
scientific staff at governmental research institutes. We
offer a competitive package of compensation including
pension contribution and health insurance is provided free
of charge for Danish residents. We encourage researchers

JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position includes responsibilities for research and
for Extension and resident teaching, with primary
responsibilities for research and Extension teaching. It
is part of a University-wide initiative on Community-Based
Regional Economic Development that is being led by the
University of Minnesota Extension Service. The Assistant
Professor will be expected to:
(a) Develop and conduct a nationally recognized research
program in regional economics. Focus for empirical
applications could include: metro/non-metro linkages,
migration, industrial clusters, infrastructure
investment, public finance, and the design and
evaluation of economic development policies.
(b) Work with multidisciplinary teams, including regional
extension educators, to develop and support delivery of
research-based educational programs and initiatives.
These programs will help communities recognize their
comparative advantage and formulate viable, sustainable
economic development strategies. They will also inform
policy makers at local, state, regional, and national
levels on how alternative policies affect economic
development.
(c) Develop and teach a graduate level course on regional
economics.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Essential:
Ph.D. in agricultural economics, applied economics,
economics, regional science or a closely related field by
date of appointment.
Desired:
- Demonstrated expertise in the application of economic
theories and quantitative methods in the analysis of
regional economic problems.
- Demonstrated expertise in spatial modeling of regional
economies.
- Demonstrated success in working as part of multi-
