Research funding will be awarded in amounts up
to $10,000 for individual scholars and up to
$20,000 for groups of scholars.
Deadline: January 15, 2008, by 5:00 p.m.
Central Standard Time
Sponsored and Administered by the
Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation
The 2007 Kauffman Symposium on Entrepreneurship and
Innovation Data ( www.ssrn.com/link/2007-Kauffman.html )
brought together representatives from more than 30 new or
newly-updated data sets that can be used for research into
entrepreneurship and innovation. To further the goals of
the Symposium, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation is
pleased to announce a small grants program for researchers
interested in analyzing one or more of the data sets
presented at the Symposium.
RESEARCH FUNDING CATEGORIES:
Research funding will be awarded in amounts up to $10,000
for individual scholars and up to $20,000 for groups of
scholars. There are three entrepreneurship and innovation
funding categories:
Dissertations: for doctoral students wishing to use one of
the data sets to write dissertations
Database Improvements: for scholars willing to improve the
understanding of the data sets by merging across data sets
Policy Analysis: for scholars interested in advancing
understanding of a particular aspect of entrepreneurship or
innovation policy
Each individual data set has different requirements for
access and the Kauffman Foundation does not imply or
guarantee access. Proposals will be considered on their
scholarly merit and fit to the funding priorities listed.
Conditional awarding of grants will be made for proposals
that seek to utilize a data set for which the researchers
have not yet gained permission for use, but final awarding
of grants will not be made until researchers have secured
proper approval from all organizations providing data for
the project.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
Researchers will be required to: (1) report on research
progress, and (2) present working papers as a part of the
Kauffman Foundation's working paper series with SSRN, which
does not preclude publication in journals.
Research proposals should consist of the following:
- Identification of the category into which the proposal
falls.
- A description of the proposed work (up to ten pages).
- The CV of the researcher(s).
- An itemized budget, including additional funding and a
narrative justification.
Authors should use Arial typeface with a twelve-point font
and one-inch margins. The deadline to apply for research
funding for this small grants program is January 15, 2008,
by 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time.

Symposium. Funding is open only to students pursuing doctoral
degrees and scholars associated with an accredited U.S.
institution of higher education or non-profit organization.
All grant funds are required to be used for direct project/

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
KAUFFMAN FOUNDATION-FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF CLEVELAND
CONFERENCE ON ENTREPRENEURIAL FINANCE
Proposals are sought for conference papers to be featured
in a special issue of the Journal of Money, Credit, and
Banking.
Although most scholars recognize the importance of
understanding how new companies are financed, they have
made relatively little progress in investigating this
process empirically, largely because of the lack of
available data. However, in recent years, some scholars
have begun to examine entrepreneurial finance questions
using large, representative databases, and new datasets are
now available that permit the examination of these
questions in ways not possible previously. To encourage the
investigation of these databases, the Ewing Marion Kauffman
Foundation and the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland are
co-sponsoring a conference on entrepreneurial finance, to
take place in Cleveland, Ohio at the Federal Reserve Bank
of Cleveland on March 12-13, 2009. A pre-conference will be
held at the Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City, MO., on
August 21-22, 2008. A subset of the papers presented at the
conference will be published in a special issue of the
Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking.
RELEVANT DATABASES:
The purpose of this conference is to bring together
scholars who are looking at issues in entrepreneurial
finance by using data that are representative of a known
population. In particular the Ewing Marion Kauffman
Foundation would encourage researchers to examine the
following databases, many of which it supports, including:
Angel Investor Performance Project
papers.ssrn.com/so13/papers.cfm
Federal Reserve Survey of Small Business Finances
papers.ssrn.com/so13/papers.cfm
Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances
www.federalreserve.gov/pubs/oss/oss2/scfindex.html
Global Entrepreneurship Monitor
Integrated Longitudinal Business Database
Kauffman Firm Survey
Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics I and II
Survey of Business Owners
TOPICS:
Abstract proposals are not limited to these data sets. Some
of the possible research questions of interest for the
conference are:
- What are the primary sources of financing for new
businesses?
- When do start-ups use debt and when do they use equity
financing?
- What characteristics of new firms are associated with
certain types of financing?
- Are certain types of new firm founders more likely than
others to obtain financing?
- What are the similarities and differences among different
sources of informal financing (friends, family, and
business angels)?
The Kauffman Foundation will pay an honorarium of $5000 for
each paper presented at the conference and will pay for the
travel expenses of one author to attend the conference and
preconference. The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland will
host the 2009 conference and the Kauffman Foundation will
host the 2008 pre-conference. Papers for the conference
will be selected by Tim Dunne (Federal Reserve Bank of
Cleveland), James Thomson (Federal Reserve Bank of
Cleveland), Alicia Robb (University of California at Santa
Cruz), and Scott Shane (Case Western Reserve University).
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
Abstract submissions of up to 2000 words are due May 15,
2008 and should be submitted electronically to:
Email: MAILTO:scott.shane@case.edu
Invitations for papers to be presented at the pre-
conference and conference will be issued by June 15, 2008.
Interested scholars may consult the Kauffman Foundation website at:
www.kauffman.org/datasymposium
for information about many of these data sources and about

some of the data sets.

CALL FOR PAPERS
CONFERENCE
THE FIRST DECADE OF EUROPEAN MONETARY UNION
Organized by:
Pierre L. Siklos, Wilfrid Laurier University
and Viessmann European Research Centre, Waterloo, Canada
and
Martin Bohl, University of Munster, Munster, Germany
28th May, 2008
By the end of 2008, the European Central Bank will
celebrate its first decade as the institution responsible
for the single monetary policy in the euro area. European
monetary union is a singular event, but it is only the most
visible element of the grand project of European
integration whose roots can be traced back to the 1960
Treaty of Rome. The Viessmann European Research Centre at
Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Munster,
are organizing a conference on the developments and lessons
for Europe and regions elsewhere in the world, from
European integration. We are interested in papers that
evaluate the experience with European Monetary Union, the
prospects of greater monetary integration spreading to
other parts of the world, the problems associated with
harmonizing fiscal policy conducted by sovereign states in
an area with a single monetary policy, the prospects for
the euro as a leading reserve currency, the challenges in
expanding the adoption of the single currency to more
countries, obstacles to future EU expansion and
integration, as well as political-economy issues that
emerge in a region with a single currency but within a
loose political union.
LOCATION:
The workshop will take place on May 28th, 2008, in Munster,
Germany.
TOPICS:
Any papers that fit the themes outlined above will be
considered for presentation.
EXPENSES:
Expenses for travel (economy class round-trip) and
accommodation will be partially covered for speakers and
discussants.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
Proposals should be sent to:
CONTACT: Pierre L. Siklos
Email: MAILTO:psiklos@wlu.ca
by December 31st, 2007. Only completed papers, however,
will be accepted for the final program. Drafts will be due
by April 25th, 2008.
Notifications of conditional acceptance will be sent by
January 18th, 2008.
Authors should confirm their acceptance of the offer by
March 14th, 2008.
