RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM ON INSURANCE MARKETS AND REGULATION

The Searle Center on Law, Regulation, and Economic Growth
at Northwestern University School of Law presents a
Research Symposium on Insurance Markets and Regulation
featuring rigorous, high-quality, policy-relevant research
by scholars from Northwestern University and other leading
academic institutions. Panels cover research on Optional
Federal Chartering of Insurance Companies; Competition in
Insurance Markets; Insurance Regulation in Theory and
Practice; Terrorism Insurance; Medical Malpractice; Tort
Reform; and Emerging Public Policy Issues and Research
Topics in Insurance.
The symposium features a Keynote Address by Representative
Melissa Bean (D-Illinois, 8th District) who has been a
major force in the recent bipartisan introduction of the
National Insurance Act of 2007. The Act would create an
optional federal charter (OFC) for life and property/
casualty insurance providers. The OFC is intended to reduce
regulatory obstacles to improving the cost and delivery of
insurance products to American consumers and businesses.
"Regulatory obstacles currently discourage insurance
innovation and nimble product development to capitalize on
emerging growth markets. Eliminating the need to
coordinate with 51 state regulators and accelerating the
time to market potential will foster greater industry
innovation and agility," said Rep. Bean. "It's time to
allow the insurance industry to move into the 21st century
so that consumers can benefit from reduced costs and
innovative products," Bean said. "The National Insurance
Act will promote a more robust and competitive insurance
industry domestically and internationally, . . . consumers
will realize those benefits."

2008 IREBS CONFERENCE ON
REAL ESTATE ECONOMICS AND FINANCE
International Real Estate Business School (IREBS)

June 13-14, 2008
The IREBS International Real Estate Business School,
University of Regensburg is organizing a two day Conference
on Real Estate Economics and Finance. The conference will
take place in the beautiful medieval city of Regensburg, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of Bavaria
(Germany). The conference is scheduled from June 13th to
14th, 2008, a week before the European Real Estate Society
(ERES) 2008 conference.
The conference will feature about 10 papers over a two-day
period covering a wide range of current issues in real
estate economics and finance. The conference will provide
an ideal venue for those interested in presenting
preliminary ideas and receiving comments from an eclectic
group of researchers.
TOPICS:
Submission of papers in all areas of real estate economics
and finance is encouraged. In particular, we welcome
submissions on:

- Real Estate Securities and Returns
- Real Estate Assets and Portfolio Choice
- Real Estate Market Dynamics

honorarium to partially cover both travel and accommodation

BANK FOR INTERNATIONAL SETTLEMENTS (BIS)
Senior Economist
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an
international financial institution that promotes central
bank cooperation and provides banking services to central
banks and international organisations. Based in Basel,
Switzerland, with representative offices for Asia and the
Pacific in Hong Kong SAR, and for the Americas in Mexico
City, the BIS has staff from some 50 countries.
The BIS is running a new research programme on financial
and monetary policy issues in the Asia-Pacific region. For
this programme, it seeks to appoint a Senior Economist for
the BIS Representative Office for Asia and the Pacific,
Hong Kong SAR.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Designs and carries out research on topics of interest to
Asia-Pacific central banks (under the guidance of the
line manager) and welcomes collaboration with economists
at central banks in the region.
- Assists in the preparation of background notes for
regional meetings of central banks that discuss these
topics; contributes to the organisation of such meetings.
- Develops contacts with senior officials in Asia-Pacific
central banks involved in economic and financial analysis
and monetary operations.
- Establishes contacts at other financial institutions in
the region in order to follow financial market
developments in Asia and the Pacific.
- Ensures ongoing contacts between Asia-Pacific central
banks and the BIS head office; liaises with Head Office
economists.
- Works with Banking Department and Risk Control staff at
the Asian Office.
- Represents the BIS at regional meetings and conferences.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in economics or finance, or equivalent professional
experience.
- Working knowledge of financial and monetary economics and
experience in analysing topics in these fields at a
central bank, international institution or major
financial firm. Flexibility in applying economic analysis
to unfamiliar issues and with limited data.
Resourcefulness in collecting data. Experience in
analysing financial markets, especially fixed income
markets, is a plus.
- Self-starter, curious, team player. Ability to work
independently as well as in small teams, to adjust to
variable requests at short notice, and to work under
tight deadlines.
- Excellent drafting in English on technical questions for
non-technical readers. Knowledge of a major East Asian
language a plus.

Executive Director
The New York Census Research Data Center (NYCRDC)
Consortium seeks applicants for the position of Executive
Director of the NYCRDC, located at Baruch College, starting
on September 1st, 2008. This is a part-time position,
suitable for someone with an academic or research
appointment at a New York area institution. The Executive
Director appointment is reviewed every year by the NYCRDC
Executive Committee and typically has a term of three
years.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Executive Director of the NYCRDC is responsible for
overseeing the operations of the NYCRDC (Baruch) and
promoting the research mission and financial health of the
NYCRDC, coordinating and informing its governance
activities, publicizing its activities, and representing it
in external venues and to the Census Bureau. The Executive
Director works with the Center’s Administrator and other
staff.
The part-time Executive Director position is designed to be
performed by a full-time faculty member or other full-time
academic staff member who is eligible for summer salary
support or sponsored research salary reimbursement.
Specific time commitments and payments can be customized to
accommodate the requirements of the Executive Director's
primary employer.

following positions in its Faculty of Law, Economics and
Finance: Professor/Assistant Professor in Macroeconomics
(Ref: FDEF/ F2-080004 to be quoted in all correspondence).
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
The professor/assistant professor will lead, with other
already active professors, theoretical and/or applied
researches in macroeconomics. Preference will be given to
the aspects of financial macroeconomics (for example asset
pricing, consumption and tax smoothing, equity puzzle) but
other domains of macroeconomics will also be considered.
The professor/assistant professor will teach at Bachelor
and Master level.
The successful candidate will have:
- A PhD in economics;
- A significant scientific record evidenced by
international publications;
- Significant capabilities in the administration of study
programs;
- Experience and aptitude for teaching and supervision of
research at university level;
- The capacity to undertake academic research at high
level;
- The capability to work in a multilingual environment in
which good knowledge of both spoken and written French
and English are essential and fluency in other languages
are an additional advantage;
