This is a "special edition" of the gtz-ecosan-newsletter, in which we would like to give you some short-term information on events, deadlines for submission of abstracts, or opportunities for job-applications, which will come to pass before the next regular issue of the newsletter will be distributed.

EU Sanitation Policies and Practices, 28-29 January in Brussels, Belgium

Organiser: Women in Europe for a Common Future, European Water Partnership, KIWA Water Research, Global Water Partnership, Coalition Clean Baltic in Brussels,
The event will bring together key experts from different sectors: EU Commission (Environment and Health), European scientists on ecological sanitation, WHO (World Health Organization), investment organizations: EBRD, WB, representatives of the Environment, Health and Rural Ministries from the old and new member states, to present the situation on water and sanitation in the EU, to take into account lessons learned and to formulate a policy recommendation for the future.
The program of the event will have sessions focussed on:
- Policy and situation on water and sanitation in the EU and new member states
- Experiences of the new member states in implementing the cohesion and funds
- Solutions and enabling factors to make sustainable sanitation achievable

5th SuSanA Meeting, 15-17 February 2008 in Durban, South Africa

The next meeting of the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) will be held in Durban, South Africa just before the AfricaSan+5 conference. The meeting is planned to monitor progress of the working groups and other activities of the SuSanA, and update and coordinate the commitments of the partners. The meeting is open for all which want to actively contribute to the aims of the SuSanA. Groups, persons, institutions working on sustainable sanitation issues, that have not been at the first SuSanA meetings in Eschborn, Duebendorf, Stockholm and New Delhi and are interested in joining the "Sustainable Sanitation Alliance", are very welcome to participate.

On Friday evening (February 15th 2008) from 18:00 to 20:00 a meeting of the SuSanA working group on sustainable sanitation for cities is planned.
Furthermore a SuSanA side-event is foreseen as an official part of the AfricaSan+5 on Sunday, February 17th 2008 followed by an AfricaSan+5 Meet and Greet co-hosted by the SuSanA.

To promote sanitation in the international year of sanitation the DILG - gtz Water and Sanitation Programme will undertake a Visayas-Mindanao (VizMin) Sanitation Summit in Dumagete City. A Sustainable Sanitation Jingle had been launched on Monday 21st January in a pre-event.

Up-to-date approaches regard the organic residues as a highly valuable resource which leads in some areas already to a carbon competition for the use on soils for food production or for the generation of renewable energy. Future valorisation of organic residues as feedstocks for the so-called "Biobased Economy" has just started which consider organic residues as a carbon source for chemical transformation processes for food, chemistry and energy applications

IOBB Internet Seminar in Re-use of Domestic Wastewater for non-potable purposes with respect to Haroonabad, Pakistan, 21 January - 03 February 2008

The purpose of this e seminar is to review the role of waste water reclamation and reuse for non potable applications in the context of efficient water use management for urban and peri-urban areas of Pakistan. The e-seminar will discuss the conclusions of the IWMI study and its relevance to other cities in Pakistan with similar issues. Expected outcomes will be to give recommendations for further work as well as to review health impacts and how to reduce them using both treatment and non treatment options.
