1. ZALF, Doktorandenstelle „Climate Change in Africa“

The Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), Müncheberg, Germany, calls for applications for

1 PhD position (TVL 13, 50 %)

for the research project “Strategies for Adopting to Climate Change in Rural Sub- Saharan Africa: Targeting the Most Vulnerable” financed by the GTZ/BMZ Research Programme: “Adaptation of African Agriculture to Climate Change”.

The project will be jointly carried out with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Potsdam Institute of Climate Change Research (PIK) as the main partners.

Project Description

The project aims to reduce vulnerability of rural households to climate change through better-coordinated and targeted food system adaptation strategies.

The purpose of the project is to provide regional organizations, policymakers and farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa with tools to identify and implement appropriate adaptation strategies.

Description of the position

"Acceptance of adaptation strategies of stakeholder groups".

Climate change has many implications for the rural poor. Adaption strategies resulting from impact modelling will be provided within the project but, in addition, the acceptance of recommended strategies is crucial towards a real added value for marginalised people to stabilise their livelihoods.

In this regard the task of the position is to (1) analyse the acceptance of adaptation strategies, (2) to investigate the perception of changes / strategies in a people- centred approach. (3) develop target strategies to improve acceptance of adaptation, and (4) survey relevant existing land use and management systems related to good agricultural practices.

The results will be integrated into synthesis reports/manuals for policymakers, outreach, and contribute to capacity development. The project aims to understand how stakeholders would react to policy proposals; under what conditions stakeholders would negotiate their positions to allow policy action; and which pathways of Good Practices can be recommended.

Requirements

- Masters degree in Social Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Geography

- Working knowledge of English, both written and oral communication skills

- Capacity to work in an interdisciplinary team environment

- Willingness to travel abroad for extended periods of time

4. ETH: PhD Position in Environmental and Resource Economics

(Theme: Climate Change, Land Use and External Changes) at ETH Zurich (Switzerland)

The Chair of Environmental Policy and Economics at the Institute for Environmental Decisions, ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), invites applications for one PhD position for three years, with full funding. The starting date is expected to be on or before July 1, 2008, depending on the successful candidate’s availability.

In 2005, the Stern Report (2006) indicated that agricultural production is directly responsible for 14 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), while indirectly responsible for perhaps another 18 percent of GHG emissions through deforestation and the burning of biomass. Although land use changes at the local level could significantly contribute to climate change mitigation, such strategies are not often applied. Policies aimed at reducing GHG need to address global externalities and align local-level incentives with global-level benefits. Economic policy instruments such as environmental taxes and payments for environmental services (PES) seek to internalize environmental costs or benefits into production or consumption decisions. As part of CLIMPOL (Climate Policy Making for Enhanced Technological and Institutional Innovations), a collaborative research project at the Institute for Environmental Decisions (IED), this PhD will investigate how PES could be used to optimally manage the effects of both climate-related and non-climate- related uncertainties on farmers’ land-use decisions.

The successful candidate will be full-time PhD student at ETH Zurich, under the supervision of Professor Stefanie Engel and Dr. Charles Palmer. In addition to their doctoral research and related PhD courses, they will provide part-time assistance (10%) to the Chair. More information about the Chair and its research interests is available at: www.pepe.ethz.ch.

Requirements: Candidates should have a Master’s degree in Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, or Agricultural Economics. The position requires excellent communication and writing skills in English. Other languages relevant for fieldwork purposes would be desirable.

How to apply: To apply for these positions please E-mail a complete CV, including the following information, to: charles.palmer@env.ethz.ch : (i) Educational history with the names of universities, years of attendance and completed degrees; (ii) a list of attended courses in economics (particularly microeconomics and econometrics) specifying the grades; (iii) names of two academic referees that could be contacted for more information.

The received applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.

Only those applicants whose profiles are likely to fit the positions will be notified for further details and interviews.

7. BEF China: Forest Scientist in Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Research

The multidisciplinary Chinese-European DFG Research Unit BEF China (FOR 891): “The role of tree and shrub diversity for production, erosion control, element cycling, and species conservation in Chinese subtropical forest ecosystems” seeks to set up a new forest Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning (BEF) experiment in subtropical forests in China.

The objective of this experiment is to analyze the influence of tree and shrub species diversity on ecosystem functioning and services in one of the most prominent diversity hotspots in the northern hemisphere. Using a species pool of about 100 native tree and shrub species we will plant experimental forest stands, varying in both tree and shrub species richness, on a total area of about 100 ha. A range of biodiversity and ecosystem variables will be measured to

assess community dynamics and its relation to primary productivity, carbon and nitrogen storage, nutrient cycling, and prevention of soil erosion. In addition, the experimental approach will be combined with comparative studies in existing forests.

The project will be carried out in a close collaboration between Chinese and European researchers with complementary interests and skills. The joint research will help to resolve one of the most central issues in ecology and global change biology: how plant diversity may be used to establish forests that stabilize the environment and maintain vital ecosystem services in the face of multiple stresses. For further information see http: www.botanik.unihalle.de/bef-china.

The open position is with the

Central project (Z 1), Position for a forest scientist

(Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Institute of Biology / Geobotany and Botanical Garden)

Specific tasks of the position

The responsibility of the forest scientist will be to supervise all steps of establishing the experimental forests. These comprise the following tasks:

− organizing and supervising seed collections,

− advising and controlling the process of raising more than 500 000 seedlings a commercial nursery. Establishment of documentation and quality control processes in the nursery for the purpose of raising the plants,

− advising on details of site selection and rental,

− keeping contact to local stakeholders and local authorities,

− supervision of site preparation activities, such as clearing of secondary growth,

establishment of access paths and plot boundaries,

− organisation of tree and shrub planting and implementation of the experimental and planting design,

− supervision stand management such as weeding after planting.

This work will be carried out in close cooperation with the Chinese partners. Further aspects of the work will include the coordination of scientific activities on the experimental sites, supervision of Chinese and German technicians, organization of accommodation and transport as well as preparation of workshops. The scientific responsibilities will comprise supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, who will be working on the experimental sites, and the collection of data (e.g. recording of growth, collection of plant and soil data) and participation in the final synthesis of results.
