About the RLC Bonn

The “Alternative Nobel Prize”, officially known as Right Livelihood Award (RLA) is granted annually by the Right Livelihood Foundation in the Swedish parliament to persons or organizations with an outstanding commitment in peace, environmental or human rights affairs. So far, 140 laureates from 60 different countries have been granted the RLA, which was founded by the Swedish philatelist and author Jakob von Uexküll.

The Bonn Right Livelihood College was founded 2010 and is hosted by ZEF with support of the German Academic Exchange Program (DAAD)

About the laureates:

Sulak Sivaraksa (born 1933 in Thailand) is the initiator of several social, humanitarian, ecological and spiritual movements and other non-government organizations in Thailand. He is known as one of the fathers of the "International Network of Engaged Buddhists" (INEB), which was established in 1989 with leading Buddhists including the 14th Dalai Lama as its patrons.

He was exiled more than once from Thailand and was arrested in 1984 for lèse majesty. Thanks to an international storm of protest, he was shortly released. Sivaraksa was again charged with lèse majeste in September 1991 after a talk about the repression of democracy in Thailand. He fled the county and went againn into exile until he was able to convince the courts of his innocence in 1995.

Sivaraksa won the Right Livelihood Award for his vision, activity and spiritual engagement in finding a way for development which is based on democracy, justice and cultural integrity.

Dr. Helena Norberg-Hodge (born 1946 in India) is an analyst of the impact of the global economy on cultures and agriculture worldwide. She made an award-winning documentary ("The Economics of Happiness"). She has helped establish several indigenous organizations in Ladakh including the Ladakh Ecological Development Group (LEDeG). The goal of that NGO is to promote ecological and sustainable development of Ladakh, focusing mainly on the promotion of renewable energy, particularly solar energy. She received 1986 the "Alternative Nobel Prize" as recognition for her work for this NGO.
