Heading for new shores: Research about Abidjan's waterfronts

December 01, 2017.

Waterfront Metropolis Abidjan is a new research project, funded by the <link http: www.dfg.de en index.jsp>German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) for the upcoming two years.

This anthropological research initiative will analyze the interplay of everyday urbanity, spontaneous urbanization, town planning, and real estate development along the waterfronts of the Ebrié Lagoon, which is located in the southern part of Cote d’Ivoire’s metropolis.

The analysis is based on an ethnographic case study of an informal settlement which evolved on a central peninsular as a result of various evictions across the city some ten years ago. The analysis will then continue with larger discourses about urban renewal and becoming a sustainable city.

ZEF Senior Researcher Irit Eguavoen will work with three colleagues from the Centre Suisse des Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d´Ivoire (CSRS) who will contribute their expertise in urban water transport and remote sensing to the project. The research officially starts in December 2017 and will last 24 months.
