Implementation-oriented research in Uzbekistan: Project’s research innovations demonstrated to high-ranking policy-makers
The Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources of Uzbekistan, Dr. Zafar Ruziev, has been on mission to the region of Khorezm on April 7, 2011. In this context, he also paid a visit to one of the research and so called “intervention” sites of the ZEF/UNESCO project in this region.

Successful training program in GIS and remote sensing for higher education in Uzbekistan stays on track
The State University of Urgench (UrDU) in Uzbekistan organized an advanced training in modern Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques and remote sensing (RS) methodology for its staff in Urgench from March 23 to April 1, 2011. This was the second “training of trainers” and a follow-up on the first and very successful training which was held at the University of Urgench in September 2010. The trainings are organized in cooperation with the ZEF/UNESCO project based in Urgench and the University of Wuerzburg, Germany.

Scientists in interaction: ‘Follow-the-innovation’ research generates outcome
The lead authors of the four main research areas (‘innovation packages’) of the FTI process in the ZEF/UNESCO project in Uzbekistan have met at ZEF in January 2011 to discuss, summarize and analyze their results. This so-called ‘write-shop’, resulting in scientific reports and journal articles, was performed in a one-week group session with simultaneous writing and discussing under the lead of ZEF Senior Researchers Mehmood Ul Hassan and Anna-Katharina Hornidge. The four lead authors are Inna Rudenko (Conservation agriculture), Nodir Djanibekov (Water User Association), Akmal Akramkhanov (Salinity mapping) and Elena Kan (Afforestation on marginal land).
