DESCRIPTION:Rather than a dividing line\, the border functions as a zone w
here people from both sides of Haiti and the Dominican Republic live as cl
ose neighbors with deep relationships\, creating an island isolated betwee
n two countries. This presentation explores the "An Island for Two\," conc
ept\, where the border exists like an island placed inside another island.
Within this space\, Haitians and Dominicans share unique proximity and a
specific spatial solidarity. It is a cultural and social island\, a gatewa
y where the border experiences dialectics\, rupture\, and suture. Ultimate
ly\, it represents the revenge of geography over history: what history div
ided\, geography has united. \n\nJean-Marie Théodat's work focuses on bor
ders\, identity\, and the intertwined histories of Haiti and the Dominican
Republic. He is the author of influential works and has contributed widel
y to debates on postcolonialism\, debt\, and urban life in Haiti.

DESCRIPTION:Water is at the center of the struggle for life. Modern civili
zation's dependence on capitalist formations has led to the destruction of
ecosystems and water-bodies as sacred entities. Rivers and mudflats\, as
complex hybrid networks\, reveal ways of living amid a planetary crisis an
d can offer creative socio-ecological care practices. Drawing from extensi
ve fieldwork in Latin America and the Caribbean\, Denisse Roca-Servat\, pr
oposes to think with water as a point of departure for envisioning alterna
tives to the extractive-capitalist model. Becoming river\, therefore\, imp
 lies considering geo-hydro-social diversity\, its historical foundations\,
its multi-scalar assemblages\, and ultimately\, committing to build alter
native hydrosocial relations\, intersecting decolonial\, feminist\, and co

DESCRIPTION:The talk presents a panorama of surprising and rapid changes i
n the trader segment in domestic agrifood value chains in Africa\, Asia\,
and Latin America. This is a crucial component of transformation of value
chains from traditional to transitional and early modern phases\, as trade
rs are major “change agents” in food systems. Many of the patterns obs
erved in detailed trader surveys are at odds with conventional wisdom rega
rding the role of middlemen\, vertical integration\, outsourcing of agricu
ltural services\, etc. Observed patterns\, their drivers\, and emerging ev
idence on effects are discussed.\n\nAbout the speaker: Tom Reardon is one
of the most cited agricultural economists worldwide. He is a University Di
stinguished Professor at Michigan State University and Non-Resident Senior
Research Fellow at IFPRI. Tom is Fellow of the AAEA and Honorary Life Mem
ber of the IAAE. He resided over 20 years in Africa\, Asia\, and Latin Ame

iron- and zinc-biofortified beans and vitamin A biofortified maize seeds
in Zimbabwe. First\, we examine how experimental quantity design affects f

DESCRIPTION:The convergence of climate change\, resource degradation\, geo
political instability\, and economic shocks has intensified a set of inter
connected “polycrises” across the food\, energy\, water\, and environm

DESCRIPTION:Global food systems generate substantial social externalities
that are rarely reflected in market prices. Among these\, child labor repr
esents a particularly severe yet often hidden cost in smallholder-based ag
ricultural value chains. \nUsing primary household- and child-level survey
data from coffee-producing communities in five regions in Uganda\, this s
tudy examines the prevalence\, drivers\, and educational implications of c
hild labor in coffee production. Results show that 13.9% of children are e
ngaged in child labor with boys being significantly more engaged than girl
 s. \nTurning to coffee-specific activities\, 42% of children participated
in at least one coffee-related task during the last two agricultural seaso
ns\, with slightly higher participation among boys than girls. Regression
results show that child labor is strongly associated with children’s age
\, school attendance status\, the relation to the household head\, and the
educational attainment of the household head.

DESCRIPTION:In Senegal\, agricultural production is affected by increasing
land degradation – i.e. in the Senegal River valley\, an important rice

ated the System of Rice Intensification and involved training producers. T
his was followed by a comparative analysis of the effects of traditional p
ractices on rice production and sustainable land management. Subsequently\

DESCRIPTION:Transdisciplinary research is widely advocated as an approach
to address complex sustainability challenges. Yet it has rarely been evalu
ated whether participants actually learn\, change their practices\, or ben
efit from the collaboration. This talk presents a framework for evaluating
collaborative learning processes from the perspective of societal stakeho
lders —i.e. smallholder dairy farmers in Nakuru County\, Kenya. \nDrawin
g on a two-year collaborative learning process aimed at co-developing inno
vations to reduce milk losses\, I integrate Kirkpatrick's four-level evalu
ation scheme with second-order cybernetics and organizational learning the
ory (Learning Loops) to assess: what farmers found useful about the proces
s\, what they learned\, how their new knowledge translated into changed pr
actices\, and what concrete benefits they experienced. Results show that f

DESCRIPTION:Power and politics shape how we produce\, trade and consume ou
r food – i.e. food systems. Researchers\, practitioners and policy maker
s recognize that power relationships at different levels influence the equ
ity and sustainability issues in food systems. However\, existing evidence
has been mostly qualitative due to epistemological and methodological dis
crepancy. As a result\, we lack understanding whether and how much power r
elationships lead to material consequences\, and what methodologies can be
employed to unpack the quantitative consequences of power. This lecture g
ives an overview of current food systems debate on power and politics\, ex
isting evidence that links power relationships and food system livelihoods

economic and livelihood outcomes based on a case study of aquaculture sect

DESCRIPTION:The relationship between gender and sustainable agriculture ha
s gained increasing attention in the face of climate change and food secur
ity challenges. While existing research shows that gendered power relation
s shape farmers’ vulnerability and adaptive capacity\, gender\, intersec
ting other identity markers\, does not fully explain persistent inequaliti
es within gender groups. Drawing on qualitative research in northern Ghana
using interviews\, focus groups\, and participatory methods\, this study
explores how interpersonal dynamics influence farming practices and the ad
option of sustainable agriculture. The findings reveal that access to agri
cultural resources is shaped less by formal gender roles than by social re

his presentation asks what we have learned from employing this concept and
what further potential it has for better understanding poverty mechanisms
and for designing relevant interventions. Drawing on the literature and m
y group’s research\, I review the conceptual foundations of the aspirati
ons framework\, discuss how aspirations are formed (and possibly eroded)\,
and examine their role in productive efforts and livelihood choices. Evid
ence shows that moderately ambitious aspirations motivate effort to improv
e livelihoods\, while aspirations far removed from current reality can lea
d to frustration and inaction. Consequences for designing helpful interven
tions\, however\, are not immediately clear or seem to differ little from
what has been suggested based on other types of analysis.

DESCRIPTION:This presentation will introduce “Iakumama 2050”\, a new Z
EF-CPC research project funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Iakumama 2050
explores how “environmental peace”–a concept that reconciles human
s with nature–can be collectively imagined and enacted in the Colombian
department of Caquetá\, a region profoundly impacted by armed conflict\,
extractivism\, and deforestation. \nDeveloped in partnership with an Inga
community\, the project integrates digital humanities\, environmental peac
e research\, and indigenous epistemologies. It combines three experimental
components: (1) the co-creation of an AI-based chatbot on environmental f
utures\; (2) a collaborative podcast on local environmental conflicts and
long-term imaginaries\; and (3) the revitalization of an Inga women’s ri
tual (Atunpumsha) as a form of eco-political dialogue.\nThis talk will dis
cuss the conceptual foundations\, methodological risks\, and epistemologic
al implications of this radical transdisciplinary approach.

DESCRIPTION:Rainfed cereal production in northern Ghana is highly variable
due to rainfall uncertainty\, soil constraints\, and low-input fertility
management. Integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) can improve produc
tivity\, but outcomes depend on climate and site conditions. Using the SIM
PLACE model\, this study evaluated interactions among ISFM practices\, sow
ing dates\, soil depth\, and climate risk at a representative site. Simula
tions combined four fertility treatments (control\, inorganic\, organic\,
combined)\, contrasting soils\, multiple sowing dates\, historical climate
 \, and +2.0 °C warming across >300 GCM-based ensembles. Kernel density es
timates of yield and biomass showed that control and organic treatments ha
d low yield potential but high stability. Inorganic fertilization maximize
d yields but was most unstable\, while combined organic–inorganic manage
ment improved biomass stability and yield distributions\, supporting ISFM
as a climate-resilient adaptation strategy in northern Ghana.

ape the ways we value and manage soils. Drawing on virtual reality communi

the greatest setback. Today\, 2.8 billion people live in inadequate housin

ver\, housing has increasingly become a commodity and an object of specula

DESCRIPTION:The political economy of contract farming in Zimbabwe’s toba
cco sector\n\nContract farming (CF) has become a key mode of organizing ag
ricultural production in many rural areas of the global south with direct
consequences for work and livelihood conditions. CF is a system that invol
ves a substantial restructuring and reorganization of production and labor
relations\, outsourcing labor costs\, production costs\, and risks to con
tract farmers. This paper builds upon and extends the labor regimes framew
ork. It conceptualizes CF as a distinct labor regime characterized by flex
ibility\, fragmentation\, and the blurring of capital-labor boundaries. Th
e paper integrates insights from agrarian political economy and global pro
duction network analysis to examine how mechanisms of control—contractua
 l discipline\, indebtedness\, and managerial control—structure the produ
ction process. It also explores how these mechanisms interact with the con
 strained agency of contract farmers.
