"Space, Area Studies and Southeast Asia"
Crossroads Asia Lecture by Vincent van Houben (HU Berlin) at ZEF in Bonn
This talk will discuss how the spatial turn has changed ways in which to think about space, scale and place leading to a redefinition of the ‚area’ in area studies. In a next step, area studies as a particular way of doing scientific research is scrutinized. This way differs from the disciplines with regard to spatio-temporal setting, perspectivity and epistomology. In a third step, these ideas are then applied to Southeast Asia, where I argue that space has a distinct ‚liquid’ quality. My digressions are part of an ongoing process of reflection and meant as a starting-point for discussion.
Time and location: Wednesday, June 12th, 2013, 11 am-1pm, at ZEF (right conference room, ground floor) in Bonn.
