"Social Mobilization, Migration and Citizenship"
1st Workshop between the Research Networks Latin America and Crossroads Asia to be held July 17, 2013 at ZEF in Bonn
At present at least two strands of scholarship and debate on social mobilization can be distinguished: mobilization for (short term) protest, and mobilization for (longer-term) change. The former is prominent among social movement and protest researchers, the latter relates to the domain of political-sociological research on collective action and societal change. Scholarship on social movements, protest, mobilization, and citizenship has been thriving in and about Europe and Latin America. The debate on protest and social movements is comparatively underdeveloped in the geographical region of the Research Network Crossroads Asia because protest mobilization and social movements do not relate to changes in political power. In comparison, the Latin American case shows a significant relation between protest mobilization and political change. Social mobility can be understood as both an (upward) economic mobility and as a spatial mobility, for instance in the case of migration from rural to urban settings. Both relates to structure and dynamics of social mobilizations, for example by fostering the emergence of elites or the development of class related or ethnic collective identities. The workshop of the Research Networks Latin America, and Crossroads Asia aims to investigate the nexus of social mobilization and social mobility against the background of empirical insights from the different socio-cultural, political and geographical contexts. Potential fruitful avenues for discussion could be based on empirical case studies showing whether and how social mobilization is related to social mobility and migration. Furthermore, the workshop will be an opportunity to reflect on theoretical and methodological aspects on movements, citizenship and mobilization from a comparative perspective.
The joint workshop serves as introductory meeting for members of both networks to get to know each other’s work. It is envisaged to serve as kick-off event for a series of joint future activities that will foster the cooperation between both networks. The workshop shall provide an open, informal space with a lot of room for discussion.
Time and place: Wednesday, July 17th, 9.30-17.30, 2013 at ZEF (right conference room, ground floor) in Bonn
