The objectives of this chapter are threefold: to assess simultaneously the drivers of land degradation and the determinants of adoption of SLM practices; to model costs and benefits of action verses inaction against land degradation; and to assess the causal effects of land degradation on the welfare of the households in Tanzania and Malawi. The study will implement robust analytical techniques and use extensive data sets that comprehensively capture wide spectrum of heterogeneous contexts. The novelty of this study on ELD, SLM and poverty is that it will be among the first to provide comprehensive assessments that make the drivers and the adverse economic consequences of land degradation visible and to capture a full valuation of losses incurred due to land degradation in the two case study countries. Results are expected to expedite policy actions and investments in SLM to successfully address the land degradation problems. This chapter also seeks to estimate the causal linkages between land degradation, agricultural productivity and poverty. We further seek to highlight role of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in ground truthing of land degradation processes and on adoption of SLM practices among farm households.
