Summary

The cooperation project links two African Capacity Building and Research Centers supported by the BMBF: WASCAL and PAUWES.

On the one hand, these international initiatives show similarities with regard to the thematic work area "Climate-Water-Energy"; on the other hand, complementarities exist in the degree of implementation of research activities.

The exchange of teaching modules and experiences as well as, in particular, the implementation of joint events enriches the curriculum of WASCAL and PAUWES through broadening and diversification. This way, synergies will be mobilized for both initiatives. Further beneficial effects for WASCAL and PAUWES from the cooperation consist in the

(i) extension as well as intensification of the existing networks in the African and international research landscape;
(ii) formation of a common platform for future cooperation for all partners involved.

Methodology

The project activities can be divided into five major components:

i) Workshops on research tools and approaches (at the WASCAL-MRP/-GSP in Niger and Benin);
ii) internships (at WASCAL Competence Centre);
iii) Summer Schools on synthesizing results (at PAUWES in Algeria);
iv) coordination and planning meetings among the three consortium partners and
v) set up of the PAUWES Data Information System (PDIS) at PAUWES with links to key central data management infrastructures, such as WADI (WASCAL).

In addition, the cooperation is establishing links to universities of the Worldbank-funded Excellence Centers in Africa for expanding and intensifying the networks with WASCAL and PAUWES in Africa.
