Maike is a medical doctor with experience spanning from clinical practice to epidemiological research. She has worked at the paediatric department of the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein and at the Leibniz-Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology (BIPS) before joining ZEF’s department of Nutrition and Planetary Health in 2024. Maike holds a Master in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her doctoral thesis at the University of Würzburg focused on living conditions and mental health of asylum seekers. Current research projects at ZEF: Omics Approach for Personalised Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus for African and European Populations (OPTIMA); Protected Areas for Sustainable Nutrition Research in Somaliland (PASTURES); Plant-based dietary patterns and prospective associations with risk of type 2 diabetes in Northern Sweden.
