Thesis title

Availability and sustainable harvesting of wild edible plants in Turkana County, Kenya

Thesis abstract

Wild edible plants (WEPs) have been part of human diets for millennia. However, diets malnutrition and food insecurity constitute major development challenges globally. Understanding of availability, harvesting potential and distribution of WEPs could support their sustainable management. I will follow ethnobotany approaches to describe their availability and harvesting potential. I will also determine their human-induced threats and the potential suitable habitats using ecological niche modeling theory within Turkana County for the present and two future (2055 & 2085) climate scenarios (RCP 4.5 and 8.5 Wm-2). Findings could help comparable arid and semi-arid landscapes in Kenya and Africa at large to manage and conserve their WEPs. This is part of an ongoing The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT’s project in Kenya (2019-202) on “Improving dietary quality and livelihoods using farm and wild biodiversity through an integrated community-based approach in Ethiopia and Kenya” funded by GIZ GmbH.
